The win, coupled with a 9-4 Ursinus loss at Haverford, puts the Bullets in sole possession of first place in the conference.
Gettysburg (8-2, 4-1 CC) freshman attackman Joe Brody (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) led all scorers with two goals and an assist for three points, and sophomore attackman Rob Triplett (McLean, Va./McLean) added a career-high-tying two goals.
The Bullets saw three other players post a goal and an assist each, and the team outshot the Green Terror (6-4, 1-3 CC) 36-17. Gettysburg also dominated the faceoffs, winning 14-of-18, and turned the ball over just 16 times to McDaniel’s 25. Bullet senior midfielder Jimmy Gates (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) took all 18 faceoffs and scooped 12 ground balls.
McDaniel was led by freshman attackman Gibbs Preston and junior midfielder Bill Warner, who each had a goal and an assist.
Gettysburg scored the only goal in what proved to be a very deliberate first 10 minutes for each team. Exactly three minutes in, Brody had the ball behind the net and zipped a pass to senior midfielder Andrew Mavraganis (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield), who reeled it in about 15 yards from the right post and sprinted in uncontested for the opening strike. That would be all of the offense for the next 7:14.
Preston evened it up with a nice spin move from behind the cage at the 4:46 mark, but the Bullets scored six of the game’s next seven goals to take control. Included in that total were three in the final 3:08 of the first quarter.
McDaniel junior attackman Matt Buschman pulled the visitors back within one goal at 3-2 at the 55-second mark of the first quarter. Triplett got that one back with 15 seconds left in the frame. A teammate attempted a pass to a cutter in front of the crease that did not connect, but Triplett picked up the ball and deposited it into the back of the net.
Brody scored the only goal of the second quarter, and the Bullets came out gunning in the third period. Gates won the opening faceoff, picked up the ground ball and streaked toward the net. He drew a defender to himself and passed to junior attackman Trip Dyer (Ocean View, Del./Worcester Prep [Md.]), who converted for his team-high third game winner of the season just eight seconds into the second half.
Just 4:40 later, sophomore midfielder Tommy Kehoe (Coraopolis, Pa./Sewickley Academy) picked up a loose ball in the midfield and joined sophomore attackman Zach Pucci (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) in a 2-on-1 break. Kehoe ran toward the right post and passed across the crease to Pucci. The pass was a bit wide, but Pucci made a one-handed catch and shoot for the score.
McDaniel scored two goals in the final 5:22 of the third quarter, but Gettysburg returned the favor in the fourth quarter to stretch the lead to five goals again at 9-4. The Green Terror added a strike with just 1:10 to play, setting the final margin.
The Bullets will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Collegeville, Pa., to take on Ursinus at 2:30 p.m. |
