The Game Story:
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Ben Sufrin (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) scored four goals, classmate Trip Dyer (Ocean View, Del./Worcester Prep (Md.)) hit the 100-point plateau, and No. 2 Gettysburg scored 11 unanswered goals spanning the first through the third quarters en route to a 16-5 Centennial Conference men’s lacrosse victory Saturday afternoon at a frigid Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

The Bullets (7-0, 2-0 CC) have now tied the best start in program history, joining the 2006 and 1995 squads as teams that won their first seven outings.

Sufrin tied his career-high scoring output while sophomore Joe Brody (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) scored three goals and handed out one assist for his seventh straight hat trick to start the season. Dyer and sophomore Kyle McGrath (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) recorded two goals and one assist apiece while junior Drew Duckworth (Rye, N.Y./Hotchkiss School (Conn.)) also scored twice. Junior Tom O’Donnell (Montgomeryville, Pa./La Salle College) posted one goal and two assists while junior Zach Pucci (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewoo) had two helpers.

Making his first collegiate start, junior Zachary Furshman (Miami, Fla./Kent School (Conn.)) saved seven shots in 48:24 of action to earn his second straight victory.

Mike Farris led Muhlenberg (2-3, 0-2 CC) with two goals.

It was a 2-2 game after 15 minutes of play. The Mules outshot the Bullets 6-4 in the opening quarter, and Tim Martin scored 11 seconds into the game after winning the opening faceoff. A Tim Dwyre goal gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage, but Sufrin tied it up with his first goal of the game, scoring with 5:41 on the first-quarter clock and kicking off Gettysburg’s 11-0 run.

It was all Bullets in the second quarter, when they outscored Muhlenberg 8-0 and converted on all but two of their 10 shots. Brody accounted for two of the first three tallies in the period, and Sufrin scored back-to-back goals to make it 7-2 with 4:56 left in the half. Dyer found the back of the net with 3:37 to go, marking his 100th career point, and Duckworth potted his second goal of the day 2:07 before the break to give the Bullets a 10-2 lead at intermission.

McGrath and Dyer scored over the opening 5:34 of the third quarter as the Bullets lead ballooned to 12-2. Farris stopped the bleeding with a man-up goal at the 8:42 mark, but Gettysburg came back with the next four goals spanning the third and fourth quarters to open up a 13-goal cushion (16-3) with 5:47 left following a goal from sophomore Josh Reichert (Englewood, Colo./Kent).

The Mules managed two goals inside the final five minutes to set the final score.

Juniors John Gilfillan (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and Paul Collura (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) each made their season debut in goal for the Bullets, playing just under six minutes apiece. Gilfillan made one save and did not allow a goal while Collura stopped one shot and yielded a pair of tallies.

Andrew Bell started in goal for Muhlenberg and allowed nine goals while stopping two shots over the opening 26:23. Mike Horowitz surrendered seven goals and collected five saves.

Gettysburg continues its Centennial Conference schedule on Wednesday, when it visits Dickinson College at 3:30 p.m.
