lacrosse program combined for five first-period goals today, helping Goucher
College charge out to a 7-0 advantage on the way to a season-ending 21-9
triumph over Greensboro. The Gophers (10-6) were already assured of a winning
record prior to the game, but the victory allowed them to reach double figures
in wins for the second year in a row.
Qadir Stern (Narberth, PA/Lower Merion) tallied three goals in the opening
period, boosting the senior midfielder's career total to 124 goals and giving
him sole possession of second place in career goals at Goucher. He concludes
his career trailing only Phil Anthony (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central), who
accounted for the Gophers' other two goals in the first quarter, which ended
with Goucher leading 5-0.
Anthony, who already this season had become Goucher's all-time leader in career
goals, assists and points, added two single-season school records to his resume
today. One was for goals in a season, as with the first of the three he scored
against the Pride, he broke Brent Grabill's record of 47 set in 1998. The
senior attackman also needed five points today to surpass Tim Asher's record of
68 points established in 1997, and he achieved that with his three-goal,
three-assist performance.
Anthony's final career numbers: 132 goals, 94 assists and 226 points.
Max Agee (Towson, MD/Towson), another of the six seniors who were in uniform
today for the Gophers, matched Stern and Anthony by scoring three times against
the Pride (2-12). Freshman Ian Montgomery (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall)
contributed four goals to the win, and junior Ashley Tarran-Jones (Manchester,
England, Stockport Grammer) had three goals.
Mike Medley (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) supplied the Gophers with one goal and
three assists, finishing as the team leader in assists with 23.
Senior Michael Amash (Guilderland, NY/Christian Brothers Academy), as he did
for the first 61 games of his career, started in goal for the Gophers, making
six saves and allowing only three goals while playing 37:01.
