The Game Story:
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 23, 2002)—Hampden-Sydney sophomore attack Matt Fassnacht (Fairfax, VA) added five goals and two assists, while junior attack Chris Lucas (Fairfax Station, VA) scored three goals and registered three assists to lead the ninth-ranked Tiger lacrosse team to a 19-3 pounding of Greensboro College today at Hundley Stadium. The win moves the Tigers to 5-1 on the year, while the Pride fall to 0-7.

Hampden-Sydney jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter, paced by a pair of goals from Fassnacht and junior midfielder Phil Dick (Salem, VA). The Tigers pushed the lead to 7-0 with goals from Chris Schaaf (Midlothian, VA) and Wilson MacIlwaine (Charlottesville, VA) before Brian Leppert answered with a goal for the Pride at the 12:05 mark of the second quarter.

The Tigers tacked on five more goals over the final 12 minutes of the opening half, including strikes by John Neal (Richmond, VA), Jason Rostan (Farmville, VA) and Zach Shaw (Charlotte, NC), along with goals from Fassnacht and MacIlwaine to make the score 12-1 at the half. In the third quarter, Chris Lucas added a pair of goals, while Scott Claiborne (Woodbridge, VA) and Fassnacht also scored goals to give the Tigers 16 for the game.

Greensboro added two goals in the third quarter on strikes by J.R. Harig and Nick Harness, but it would be the team’s last of the contest as the Tigers put the game away with three more strikes in the fourth quarter. Matt Fassnacht added one to finish the game with a goal in each quarter, while Kevin Burke (Fairfax, VA) and Brad Haller (Fallston, MD) scored their first collegiate goals to seal the game, 19-3.

Fassnacht led all players with five goals, while Lucas added three and Phil Dick and Wilson MacIlwaine each finished the game with two goals. Lucas led the way with three assists, while Fassnacht, Rostan and Dick each registered two assists. The Tigers out-shot Greensboro, 42-15, and won the advantage on face-offs, 16-7.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action on Tuesday, March 26, as the team travels to Stevenson, MD, to take on Villa Julie at 3 pm.
