The Game Story:
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 5, 2008) – Virginia Wesleyan College sprinted out to 3-0 first quarter lead and never surrendered their advantage, holding off a late Hampden-Sydney rally to claim a 9-7 victory over the home-standing Tigers. Hampden-Sydney held the conferences leading scorer, the Marlins' Jordan Kenney, scoreless for the entire afternoon, but despite a strong defensive effort, fell short in their ODAC opener. The loss halts the Tigers' two-game winning streak and drops Hampden-Sydney to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Marlins improve to 7-4, 2-1 in the ODAC.

After failing to score in the opening period, Hampden-Sydney came to life in the second quarter of action, trimming the Marlins' lead to 3-2 after consecutive goals by junior Doug Carpenter (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) and sophomore Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nanesmond Suffolk). Virginia Wesleyan responded soon thereafter, extending its lead back to three goals, 5-2 on a Damian Becker strike with just two seconds remaining in the first half.

Hampden-Sydney struck first in the second half, cutting back into the deficit on another Carpenter goal with 9:00 to play in the third period. However, the Marlins answered again, earning a 7-3 advantage at the end of the third stanza following a man-up tally by Drew Langis and an even strength goal by Brett Morris.

Both teams traded goals to open the fourth period with Virginia Wesleyan holding a 9-5 lead with 5:24 to play in the game. The Tigers made one final push with time winding down, drawing with two, 9-7 on efforts from Carpenter and senior Mark Miller (Esmont, VA/Monticello), but ran out of time, giving Virginia Wesleyan the road win.

Carpenter once again led Hampden-Sydney with five points on four goals and one assist. Senior defensemen Colin Dunn (Chevy Chase, MD/Trinity Pawling) and Alex Pritzlaff (Castle Rock, CO/Kent Denver) scooped eight and five ground balls, respectively.

The Marlins, led by Becker's four goals, out-shot Hampden-Sydney 41-40, with the Tigers winning the ground ball battle 34-31.

The Tigers return to ODAC action on Wednesday, April 9 when they travel to Greensboro, NC to battle Guilford College. Face-off is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
