team earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's automatic berth to
the NCAA Division III Tournament with an 8-3 victory at top-seeded
Hampden-Sydney on Saturday afternoon in the ODAC Championship game.
The Generals assumed a 1-0 lead at the 12:30 mark of the first quarter
as sophomore midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius,
N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) tallied an unassisted goal. However, the
Tigers, ranked third in the country, responded with goals by senior
attackman John Neal (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) and junior
midfielder Phil Dick (Salem, Va./Salem) to grab a 2-1 lead at the end of
the first period.
W&L, ranked seventh in the latest Division III national poll, rattled
off four unanswered goals in the second quarter to claim a 5-2 halftime
advantage. Martin netted W&L's first two goals of the quarter, while
senior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) scored
the General's final two goals of the second stanza. Freshman attackman
Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) and sophomore attackman Matt
Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) registered one assist each in the second
period.
After the two teams exchanged one goal apiece in the third period, the
Generals put the game out of reach with two fourth quarter tallies to
provide the final margin. Fink netted his team-high 32nd goal of the
season with 10:47 to play off an assist from senior attackman Andrew
Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) and sophomore midfielder Mike McNamara
(Hunt Valley, Md./Loyola) registered the game's final goal off an assist
from Fink with 3:13 left.
Martin concluded the game with four goals, while Fink scored one goal
and dished out two assists. Barnett recorded two assists and sophomore
Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) posted 10 saves in goal.
Hampden-Sydney (13-2) sophomore goalkeeper Jeremy Bull (Raleigh,
N.C./Ravenscroft) registered 13 saves between the pipes.
For the game, W&L outshot the Tigers, 33-31, but the Tigers collected 40
ground balls compared to 37 for W&L.
The victory for the Generals comes in the inaugural ODAC Men's Lacrosse
Tournament and also broke the Tigers 13-game winning streak which was
the longest in the nation.
Washington and Lee (11-3) will now wait until the brackets are announced
for the NCAA Division III Tournament to find out its next opponent. |
