scored two straight big goals to lift the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team to an 11-8 win over Hartwick College on Wednesday in Oneonta, N.Y. Dolny finished with three goals and an assist to go along with four ground balls as the Ducks improved to 5-2 overall and remained unbeaten in the Empire 8 with a mark of 3-0. The Hawks fell to 3-4 (1-2 Empire 8) with the loss.
Sophomore attacker Daniel Prakopcyk also scored three times for Stevens. Junior midfielder Alex Heckman added a pair of goals. Senior defender/long-stick midfielder Nick Daniello finished with a team-high five ground balls. Freshman midfielder Brandon Faubert contributed four ground balls.
Meanwhile, senior attacker/midfielder R.J. Ancona was 11-for-16 in faceoffs for the Ducks. Freshman goalie Dave Decker made 14 saves as he picked up his fifth victory of the season.
Hartwick was led by freshman attacker Vito DeMola (Holtsville, N.Y.), who posted five goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Steve Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.) added two goals in the loss. Senior defender Ryan Welch (Greenwich, Conn.) picked up a team-best six ground balls. Junior goalie John Meade (Fire Island, N.Y.) made 10 stops for the Hawks.
After Hartwick scored less than two minutes into the contest, Stevens responded with five straight goals. During that stretch, Faubert, junior midfielder Matt Keating, Prakopcyk, freshman midfielder Christopher Laurita, and Heckman scored for the Ducks. Following back-to-back goals by DeMola, Stevens went into halftime with a 7-3 lead as Dolny and Prakopcyk both scored in the final 67 seconds of the second quarter.
The Hawks battled back with two early goals in the third quarter to pull within 7-5. With 1:12 remaining in the period, Dolny gave the Ducks some breathing room as he dodged a defender behind the net, rolled around in front, and scored a goal that put Stevens in front 8-5.
Dolny extended the margin to four goals (9-5) when he beat Meade with a left-handed shot to the top right corner on a similar play with 11:17 remaining in the game. Prakopcyk helped give the Ducks a five-goal advantage when he scored his third goal of the contest off a feed from Keating with 9:30 to go.
Following three straight goals by Hartwick that cut the margin to 10-8, Heckman sealed the victory with a man-up tally in the final minute. Dolny found Heckman in front of the net as the Hawks were scrambling to create a turnover.
For the game, Hartwick out-shot Stevens 45-30. The Ducks owned a 27-24 edge in ground balls and won 12-of-23 faceoffs. Stevens converted on 95.8 percent (23-for-24) of its clearing attempts. The Hawks were 19-for-21 (90.5 percent) in clears. In extra-man opportunities, the Ducks finished 1-for-4. They also held Hartwick to 2-for-10 in man-up situations. Through the first seven games of the season, the Ducks’ man-down defense has surrendered just five goals in 37 opportunities (13.5 percent opponents’ conversion rate).
Stevens will return to action on Sunday when it faces St. John Fisher College at 1 p.m. in Rochester, N.Y. The Ducks have now won 53 straight regular-season conference games dating back to the 2000 season when Stevens competed in the Knickerbocker Lacrosse Conference. |
