The Panthers advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals at Cortland on Wednesday, May 17th at a time to be determined. Springfield, the Pilgrim League champions, ends its season with a 13-5 record.
Jim Cabrera sparked the first quarter scoring with two goals as Henry Sheehan contributed a goal and two of his game-high six assists during the 5-0 run. Both of Cabrera’s goals were point-blank shots in front of the Springfield cage.
In the second, the Pride broke a 19:33 scoring drought when defenseman Paul Voegeli grabbed a pass near midfield and dodged his way deep into the Panther defense to put a shot past Middlebury goalie Alex Palmisano at the 10:27 mark. That was the only goal for Springfield in the half, while Middlebury countered with three more goals, two assisted by Sheehan, taking an 8-1 lead into the break.
The third period saw the Panthers tack on one more goal before Steve Krasco scored with 12:35 remaining, cutting the Panther lead to 9-2. Middlebury answered with another three-goal run building a 12-2 lead with 6:23 remaining third quarter.
Springfield cut the lead to 12-4 with 13:24 left in the fourth when Greg Welch scored with a long shot through traffic. Middlebury, who out shot Springfield 50-27 for the game, responded with another 5-0 run, including a man-up goal by Aaron Herter.
Cabrera led all scorers with three goals, Herter, Jonathan Sisto, Mike Stone and Nick Bastis each had two tallies. Sheehan collected six assists, while five other Panthers added one apiece. Voegeli, Krasco, Welch and Pat Cavanaugh each scored for Springfield.
Palmisano was impressive in goal for Middlebury, making 11 saves on the afternoon, while Kyle Cloutier made 15 stops for Springfield.
The win by Middlebury avenges an early season road loss to Springfield 11-10 back in March. Middlebury’s 17 goals scored were the highest offensive output of the season, while the four goals allowed tied its season mark for fewest goals allowed. In defeat, the Pride allowed a season-high 17 goals, while tying its mark for the fewest goals scored in a game.
