The Panthers return to action next Wednesday as they make their annual trip to Pennsylvania to play Gettysburg in a non-league game.
Stevens Institute struck first as Stephen Pascone scored an unassisted goal at the 11:13 mark in the first quarter. Middlebury then went on a five goal outburst as five different Panthers found the back of the net to build a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter. The Ducks answered with three goals before the half ended and trailed 5-4.
In the third quarter, the Ducks tied the game at 5-5 as Matt Keating netted his second goal of the game. Middlebury scored the next three, including a man-down goal by Nick Bastis off a great feed by the Panthers face-off specialist Peter Mellen to build an 8-5 lead. The Ducks scored three more in the third while the Panthers answered with two more of their own to hold a 10-8 advantage to start the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Middlebury built a 12-8 lead by the 12:59 mark with goals by Henry Sheehan and Jim Cabrera. The Ducks fought back to score the next three to narrow the lead to 12-11 at the 8:25 mark. Middlebury got some needed breathing room with a goal by Aaron Herter with 7:00 remaining in the game. The Ducks kept the pressure on and cut the lead to 13-12 with a goal by J.R. Oreskovich with 2:51 on the clock. With just seconds remaining, the Ducks put one last shot on goal, but time expired and the Panthers pulled out the win 13-12.
Oreskovich led all scorers with four goals and three others scored twice for the Ducks. Middlebury was led by Herter’s three goals while Cabrera and Jonathan Sisto collected two goals each. |
