HS/Webster, NY) scored off a pass from senior T.J. Rogers (Canandaigua
Academy/Canandaigua, NY) with 1:25 to play in the second overtime period
Saturday to lift Nazareth to a thrilling 17-16 victory over RIT in an
Empire 8 Conference men's lacrosse game at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Coon's goal, his third of the game, enabled the fifth-ranked Golden
Flyers to remain unbeaten in conference play at 5-0. Nazareth is 10-1
overall following its fifth straight win. RIT fell to 3-2 in conference
play and 10-3 overall.
RIT never trailed until the fourth quarter as Nazareth outscored the
12th-ranked Tigers 6-3 over the final 15 minutes to force overtime. RIT
had taken a seemingly safe 14-11 lead on a goal by Chris Copeland
(Webster HS/Webster, NY) early in the fourth quarter. Nazareth, however,
rallied to score four times in a span of less than two minutes to take
its first lead of the game.
Senior attackman Justin Wahl (Penn Yan Academy/Penn Yan, NY) started the
outburst with his third goal of the game off a pass from freshman Chris
Amidon (Onondaga HS/Marcellus, NY). Unassisted goals by Chris Balash
(Auburn HS/Auburn, NY), Ryan Feltner (Horseheads HS/Horseheads, NY), and
Brandon Brown (Ithaca HS/Ithaca, NY) followed to put Nazareth up 15-14.
Sophomore David Thering (Fairport HS/Fairport, NY) tied the score for RIT
just 23 seconds after Brown scored. Nazareth regained the lead on a goal
by Rogers off a pass from Brown with 2:48 to play. RIT's Josh Molinari
(Oswego HS/Oswego, NY) forced overtime with an unassisted score with just
20 seconds to play in regulation.
Each team had chances in overtime, but Nazareth goalie Alex Civalier
(Penfield HS/Penfield, NY) made three saves in the extra periods and
RIT's John Foley (Our Lady of Lordes HS/Guelph, ONT) made two. Nazareth
also had an apparent game-winning goal by Wahl called back in the first
overtime after being whistled for having too many players on the field.
Nazareth finally ended the game when Coon beat Foley with a low shot
after receiving the pass from Rogers.
The game was tied 3-3 at halftime, then RIT went ahead 8-6 at halftime,
and 13-10 after three quarters. Copeland finished with four goals for the
Tigers and Molinari added two goals and six assists. Colin Jesien
(Cambridge-S. Dorchester HS/Cambridge, MA), Zach Bednarz (Webster
Schroeder HS/Webster, NY), Ryan Neward (Williamsville East
HS/Williamsville, NY), and Thering all had two goals.
Rogers, Coon, Wahl, and sophomore Bryan Adams (Guilderland
HS/Schenectady, NY) each scored three times for the Golden Flyers. Balash
had two goals and one assist.
Nazareth enjoyed advantages in shots (64-41) and ground balls (62-53) and
captured 28 of 38 face-offs. Sophomore Brian Gaffeny (Fairport
HS/Pittsford, NY) won 19 of 23 for Nazareth. Foley made 18 saves for RIT
and Civalier had 11 saves for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers are idle until next Saturday when they visit Ithaca at
1 p.m. with a chance to clinch the regular season Empire 8 Conference
title.
