5-1 in the fourth quarter Saturday to rally for an 11-9 victory over the
Saints in men's lacrosse.
Junior attackman Bryan Coon (pictured) scored three of his game-high four
goals in the fourth quarter for the Golden Flyers (3-0), who entered the
game ranked sixth nationally in Division III. Senior attackman Brandon
Brown added two goals and four assists and sophomore midfielder Bryan
Adams had three goals.
St. Lawrence never trailed until the fourth quarter. The Saints were
ahead 9-7 after senior attackman Tim Loveless scored his third goal of
the game with 9:03 to play. Nazareth, however, tied the game as Coon
scored twice within a span of 81 seconds. Adams then gave the Golden
Flyers their first lead, 10-9, as he converted a pass from Brown with
6:02 left. Coon added his fourth goal of the game off an assist from
Brown with 4:28 to play.
St. Lawrence (1-1, ranked 17th nationally) had leads of 6-3 and 7-4, but
could not hold on despite three goals each from Loveless and senior
midfielder Pete Dolan, who also had 12 ground balls.
Dolan and Loveless each scored twice in the first half as the Saints led
6-4. Dolan then added his third goal early in the third quarter to push
the lead to 7-4. Nazareth closed within 7-6 on goals by Adams and Chad
Amidon, but St. Lawrence's Josh Feine scored with 32 seconds left in the
third quarter to make it 8-6 heading into the final 15 minutes.
Brown scored for Nazareth off a pass from senior Justin Wahl to open the
fourth-quarter scoring, then Loveless answered for St. Lawrence to enable
the Saints to regain their two-goal lead, 9-7. Coon, however, came
through for the Golden Flyers. An All-American and a 45-goal scorer last
year, Coon missed the Golden Flyers' season opener against St. John
Fisher with a leg injury, then saw limited action in last Sunday's win
against Adelphi. His four goals against St. Lawrence were his first four
goals of the season.
Nazareth travels to Florida next week for its spring break. The Golden
Flyers will play Amherst Friday at 1 p.m. at Sylvan Lake State Park.
