The third seeded Cougars advance into the Championship game to play Montclair State, who defeated Richard Stockton 13-3 in the other semi-final. The Privateers finish the season with an 11-4 overall record.
Although the Privateers scored first, the Cougars seemed as if they were in control the entire game. Kean answered Maritime's first goal with 6 straight, spanning the first quarter and 5 minutes of the second. The Privateers were unable to get shots on goal, as the defensive pressure by Kean was too much.
The Privateers who outscored their opponents 206-125 over the course of the season coming into the came, managed only 1 goal in each of the first two quarters. Lawrence Montreuil (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park) scored first, on a man-up goal assisted by Donald Toby (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside). Keith Fricke (White Plains, NY/White Plains) scored in the second quarter, assisted by Alex Rosero (Bellport, NY/Bellport). Maritime was only able to take 9 shots, only three of which were on goal.
The second half began with Maritime adding another goal, once again scored by Keith Fricke and assisted by Donald Toby. Kean answered with two more of their own before Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, NY/Lakeland) scored off a pass from Toby. That would be the last time Maritime scored, and Kean was able to run the clock out with their offensive unit.
The Privateers struggled statistically, winning only 7 of 22 faceoffs, taking only 22 shots (9 on goal), picking up 33 ground balls, and going 1-7 on man-up opportunities. Colin Gallagher (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) made 11 saves in net, in just over 57 minutes played.
For the Cougars, Scott Leathem and Eric Gillar each scored three times and assisted three times, to lead the offense. Dave Nichols picked up the win, playing all 60 minutes and stopping 4 shots. |
