April 12 – On a chilly and wet afternoon the Oberlin College men’s lacrosse team was unable to get past North Coast Athletic Conference foe Wittenberg University. Despite four goals in the fourth quarter the Yeomen suffered an 18-10 defeat playing at home in Savage Stadium, Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (4-4, 1-2 NCAC) opened their scoring account early in the contest rattling off three goals during the first period. Oberlin’s Alex Jacobs cut the Wittenberg margin to two scoring with 28 seconds remaining on the clock in the first quarter, earning his third goal of the season. Oberlin (0-6, 0-3 NCAC) defended much of the first quarter with Drew Zambelli turning away several Tiger chances finishing the day with 22 saves.
The Yeomen offense knocked on the door early in the second quarter with a couple of shots clanging off the cage before Wittenberg put their fourth of the day past Zambelli on a man up possession. On the ensuing face off Rob Bond took the ball the length of the offensive half of the field and slotted one past the Tiger netminder at 8:59 drawing within two at 4-2. The Tiger offense then went to work finding the back of the cage five more times to finish out the half, leading the Yeomen 9-2 at the break.
The two teams traded goals during the third stanza with Oberlin’s Erik Strand scoring a man up goal at 11:41, his first of three on the day. Jesse Kane also found the net after slashing from midfield. Jacob’s earned his second tally of the day putting the ball past the Wittenberg goalie with 5:16 remaining.
The Tigers took a 15-5 advantage into the fourth quarter. The Yeomen won the fourth quarter battle outscoring Wittenberg 4-3 during the final 15 minutes. Bond notched his second of the day with 6:20 remaining in the game. Strand (2) and Nick Sherman (1) put Oberlin’s final three goals into the cage in the final few minutes as the Yeomen battled hard.
Oberlin was out shot 52-37 on the day but won the hustle stats grabbing 55 ground balls and winning 21 face-offs compared to Wittenberg’s eight.
The Yeomen are back in action Wednesday, April 16th as they host Adrian College at 4:30 p.m. in a rescheduled contest. The March 12th meeting was postponed due to foul weather conditions.
