| | | | Current Record : (8-5) | Current Record : (9-1) | | | | Team Page For 2002 | Team Page For 2002 | | | | | | The Game Story: | Sophomore attacker Ryder Bateman (Victoria, B.C./Belmont) had 4 goals
and 2
assists and sophomore attacker Kelly Hall (Victoria, B.C./Belmont) had 3
goals as Whittier opened the game with a 10-0 run and went on to defeat Ohio
Wesleyan in non-conference action on Saturday at Selby Field.
Whittier's 27 goals is the most ever scored against Ohio Wesleyan,
topping
the old mark of 24 recorded by Loyola (Md.) in 1991. The teams' combined
total of 43 goals also established a school record, breaking the mark of 40
accomplished twice.
Four times in the opening period, the Poets struck with couplets of
goals
less than 30 seconds apart. Bateman scored twice in 28 seconds to put
Whittier on the scoreboard before junior midfielder Todd Thorpe (Tacoma,
Wash./Bellarmine) recorded unassisted goals 9 seconds apart midway through
the period for a 4-0 lead. Bateman then scored and assisted Hall 17 seconds
apart to make it 6-0, and repeated that performance 13 seconds apart later
in the quarter.
Ohio Wesleyan got on the scoreboard on a goal by freshman attacker John
Schlegel (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) late in the first quarter and added a
score by senior attacker John Galvin (Port Washington, N.Y./Kent) early in
the second to close to within 10-2, but that was as close as the Bishops
would come.
Whittier took the momentum back with another 2-goal burst 14 seconds
apart,
and after the Bishops had cut the deficit to 15-5 at halftime, the Poets got
3 goals in a span of 35 seconds early in the third quarter.
Hall led Whittier with 8 goals and 4 assists and Bateman finished with
8
goals and 2 assists. Junior attacker Luke Gilbert (Freeland, Md./Hereford)
had 5 goals and 2 assists for the Poets.
Galvin and junior midfielder Andy Rowe (Alpharetta, Ga./Penfield, N.Y.)
led
the Bishops with 4 goals and 2 assists apiece. Junior midfielder Michael
Long (New Market, Md./Linganore) had 2 goals and 5 assists, Schlegel
finished with 2 goals and 3 assists and senior attacker Matt Coughlin
(Denver, Colo./Regis Jesuit) added 2 goals and 2 assists.
