collegiate start, scored five goals to lead Salisbury past Goucher 11-3
in the semifinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament at
home. The Sea Gulls (10-3 overall) will try to capture their eighth
straight CAC title when they host Mary Washington in Sunday's conference
final. The Eagles defeated St. Mary's 6-5 in Thursday's other CAC
semifinal.
Salisbury scored the first eight goals of the game en route to a 9-1
halftime advantage. Tamberrino, who had three goals for the season
entering the contest, scored twice in the opening quarter while Andy
Arnold (four assists) added one goal and one assist as SU led 3-0 after
one quarter.
Three goals by senior Steve Brianas as well as Tamberrino's third of
the day keyed a 5-0 Salisbury run to start the second quarter as the
lead grew to 8-0. Senior Qadir Stern put Goucher (8-6 overall) on the
board with 1:19 remaining before halftime. Tamberrino answered with his
fourth goal with 26 seconds remaining to push SU's lead to 9-1 at
halftime.
Tamberrino's fifth goal and an unassisted marker by Goucher's Ian
Montgomery accounted for the only scoring in the third quarter. Each
team also tallied once in the fourth to close out the scoring.
Salisbury finished with a 34-23 edge in total shots and controlled 14
of 17 faceoffs. Individually, Salisbury's Andy Murray won 12 of his 14
face off attempts. Goalie Dan Korpon made eight saves in goal for
Salisbury. Goucher starter Mike Amash recorded zero saves while playing
the first half. Freshman Reeves Craig registered eight saves in the
second half.
