one assist as #5 ranked Washington defeated #6 Salisbury 14-10 in the
33rd annual match-up between the Eastern Shore rivals. The Shoremen
scored on three of their first four shots and built an early 4-0 lead.
Salisbury, which never led, rallied in the second half and pulled to
within 11-9 early in the fourth quarter before Washington sealed the win
with three straight markers.
Kuehn, who raised his team-leading goal total to 45 on the season,
tallied three goals in the opening quarter. He added his fourth of the
game on an extra-man goal in the second quarter as WC pushed its lead to
7-3 at halftime. Washington finished 3-6 on extra-man opportunities.
Sophomore midfielder Scott Simmons tried to bring the Sea Gulls back in
the second-half by scoring five of his team-high six goals. Simmons'
fifth of the day, with 13:39 left in the game, pulled the Sea Gulls to
within 11-9. Washington answered with the next three goals, however,
including the fifth of the day from Kuehn, to seal the win.
Freshman goalie Alex Pirani made 15 saves for Washington. Salisbury's
freshman goalie Dan Korpon made five saves. Salisbury finished with a
40-30 edge in total shots and won 18 of 27 face-offs. Individually, SU's
Andy Murray (1g-1a) won 18 of 25 face-off attempts.
Washington improves to 12-3 with the victory, while Salisbury drops to
12-4 overall. Salisbury begins play in the NCAA Tournament's first
round on Wednesday. Washington is also expected to receive an NCAA
Tournament invitation when the full16-team field is announced on Sunday
evening.
