The Game Story:
Villa Julie hosted St. Mary’s in their season opener. The Mustangs defeated the Seahawks 13-10, bringing their record to 1-0 while St. Mary’s falls to 1-1.

Villa’s Steve Kazimer (Syracuse, NY/Henniger) set the pace for the Mustangs, scoring the first goal at the 8:42 mark. Jimmy Dailey (Westminster, MD/Winter Mills) followed with a goal assisted by Kazimer. St. Mary’s put themselves on the scoreboard with 1:52 remaining in the quarter with a goals by Dennis Rosson. Kazimer retaliated with an unassisted goal to close the first period leading 3-1.

The second period was St. Mary’s time to catch up. After one goal by Zach Walsh (Reisterstown, MD/Loyola Blakefield), the Seahawks scored four consecutive goals, capitalizing on two man-up opportunities. With 16 seconds remaining in the half, Chris Baldwin (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) tied the game at 5-5.

In the third period, St. Mary’s and Villa remained tied with three goals from each team. Richard Ford (Baltimore, MD/Towson) contributed two goals with another coming from Kevin Donnelly (Laurel, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti).

The fourth period sealed the win for the Mustangs. Chris Baldwin opened the quarter with a fast goal at 14:41. Kazimer tallied two more goals before St. Mary’s grabbed two. Kazimer and Dave Couglar (Rochester, NY/G. Ray Bodley) grabbed one more goal each before the end of the game, bringing the final to 13-10.

Villa and St. Mary’s were closely matched in groundballs with 36 and 37 respectively. St. Mary’s took 34 shots to Villa’s 39 and the Seahawks won 16 of 26 face-offs. Lead scorer for the Mustangs was Kazimer with five goals and two assists. The team was led defensively by Chole Mueller (Cockeysville, MD/St. Paul's), Zach Clark (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake), and Austin Hale (Baltimore, MD/Eastern) with three caused turnovers each. Goalkeeper Eric Fleegle (Easton, MD/St. Peter & Paul) tallied 12 saves.

Villa is back in action on Saturday, March 1 at home versus Messiah at 1:00 p.m.
