It was a historic victory for the Marlins as it solidified VWC's first berth in the ODAC championship tournament since the event began in 2002. It also improved VWC's league record to 4-2, a victory record in conference competition for the Marlins, topping the 3-3 marks recorded in 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001.
Kenney (Linthicum, Md./Baltimore Mount St. Joseph) scored three goals for VWC (9-6) and Morris (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) added three goals and four assists. Senior Maicin Dunk (Towson, Md./Towson) led the assist game however, recording five.
Senior Josh Riley (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) scored one of the quickest goals of the season for the Marlins when he took a pass from Dunk on the run and fired it into the net only 14 seconds into the game. That set the tone for what was to follow for Guilford (2-10, 0-5) as the Quakers fell behind 5-0 in the first quarter and trailed 8-0 by halftime. Turnovers plagued the team from North Carolina throughout the game, as the Quakers lost the ball 31 times, 18 times in the first half.
Two goals by Kenney and one by senior Bart Christy (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) put the Marlins up 11-0 with 8:49 on the clock in the third quarter, but Guilford avoided the shutout when Tyler Zivic fired the ball into the net following a pass from Gates Benson only 27 seconds after VWC's score. Virginia Wesleyan followed the Quaker score with goals by Morris, junior Drew Langis (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and rookies David Laiti (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) and Brendan Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) to push the lead out to 15-1.
Carl Farlow gave Guilford another goal with 2:45 on the clock, but rookie Curran Lee (Calgary, Alberta/Delta West) tacked on a final score for Virginia Wesleyan with his first goal of the season.
VWC outshot Guilford 68-19 and posted a 45-29 advantage in ground balls. The Marlins also won 13 of the 22 face-offs, led by senior Drew Smythers (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) with five and Laiti with five.
Senior goalie Tom Skartsiaris (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) recorded 10 saves in 45 minutes of work for the Marlins. Sophomore John-Paul Novak (Centreville, Va./Chantilly Westfield) protected the net for VWC in the final quarter and produced one save. Andrew Vigne posted 16 saves for Guilford.
