visiting Cabrini College this afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Division
III Men's Lacrosse Tournament. Senior attackman Jon Fellows (Millington,
MD/Kent County) led the Shoremen (13-3) with six goals and two assists.
Fellows opened the scoring 48 seconds into the first quarter with an unassisted
goal. Cabrini (15-3) tied the game on its first shot, when senior midfielder
Adam Schaff (Camden, DE/Caesar Rodney) scored off a pass from senior attackman
Tom Lemieux (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) with 10:14 to play in the
period. Fellows gave the Shoremen the lead for good with a goal off an assist
from sophomore midfielder Stephen Berger (Jessup, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) with 9:11
to go in the first and then put WC up 3-1 with an unassisted tally at 5:17.
Lemieux fed Cabrini junior midfielder Mike Pape (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop
Ryan) for a goal at 2:09, but the Shoremen took a 4-2 lead when senior
attackman Craig Rentch (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) scored off a Fellows assist
with 29 seconds left in the period.
Cabrini closed the gap to one once more, eight seconds into the second period,
when Lemieux scored off an assist from senior midfielder Stuart Lile (Broomall,
PA/Marple Newtown). The Shoremen then scored the next five goals, beginning
with a Fellows goal and an assist by junior midfielder Chris Edwards
(Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin) with 14:07 left in the period. Fellows added an
unassisted tally at 8:54 and Berger followed with an unassisted goal at 8:13 to
give the Shoremen a 7-3 lead at the half.
The Shoremen scored the only two goals of the third quarter. Fellows scored his
final goal off a pass from junior attackman Eric Kuehn (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton
Wright) with 4:15 on the clock and Rentch scored off a Fellows assist with five
seconds remaining as WC pushed the lead to 9-3.
Cabrini got back on the board in the fourth quarter, ending a scoring drought
of 32:08 with an unassisted goal from Lemieux at 12:44. Pape then cut the lead
to 9-5 with 9:55 left. A Washington goal by Berger off a pass from senior
midfielder Brad Hopkins (Kennedyville, MD/Kent County) with 8:30 left in the
game rounded out the scoring.
Joining Fellows with multi-point games for the Shoremen were Berger with two
goals and one assist and Rentch with two goals. Hopkins won 11 of the 13
face-offs he attempted. Freshman goalie Alex Pirani (Woburn,
MA/Winchester/Bridgton, ME) made eight saves for WC.
Lemieux led Cabrini with two goals and two assists, while Pape tallied a pair
of goals. Sophomore goalie Antonio Masone (Port Jefferson Station,
NY/Comsewogue) made 18 saves for the Cavaliers.
The Shoremen advance to face Washington & Lee in a second round game either
Saturday or Sunday at Kibler Field. The Generals defeated Widener, 13-8, today
in another first round contest. The Shoremen won an earlier meeting with W&L
this season, 9-8.
