The Game Story:
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Third-ranked Washington College improved to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference with a 14-7 win over visiting Franklin & Marshall today at Kibler Field. Senior attackman Craig Rentch (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) led the Shoremen with four goals and two assists in the game.

Just one goal was scored during the first quarter. Shoreman sophomore midfielder Stephen Berger (Jessup, MD/Mount St. Joseph) scored an unassisted tally with 8:57 to go in the period. Neither team scored again until Rentch scored his first goal with 7:42 to go in the second. Berger followed with another goal 25 seconds later and Rentch gave the Shoremen a 4-0 lead with 6:24 to play in the half. Freshman midfielder Jon Spivey (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) made it 5-0 with 2:16 to play before Franklin & Marshall (6-5 overall, 1-2 Centennial Conference) finally got on the board with 59 seconds to go in the half when sophomore midfielder Bas Solleveld (Glen Moore, PA/Shipley School) found freshman attackman Colin Hanley (Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha) for a goal. WC rounded out the first half scoring with 10 seconds left when Rentch fed senior midfielder Brad Hopkins (Kennedyville, MD/Kent County) for a goal.

The Shoremen took a 7-1 lead when Berger scored to open the third quarter at 13:49. F&M junior midfielder Jon Singer (Reisterstown, MD/Boys' Latin) scored at 12:13 and freshman attackman Steve Welsh (Lewes, DE/Cape Henlopen) scored off a feed from senior attackman Andrew Kuskowski (Huntington, NY/Huntington) with 10:15 to go to cut the lead to 7-3. The Shoremen thwarted the Diplomat rally by scoring the next three goals in a span of 1:26. Sophomore attackman Randy Vane (Sparks, MD/Gilman School) capped off the run with 7:34 to go in the third, putting WC up 10-3.

F&M challenged once more by scoring four of the next five goals. When Kuskowski found Welsh with 8:56 to go in the fourth, the lead was cut to 11-7. The Shoremen answered right back as Rentch scored off an assist from senior attackman Jon Fellows (Millington, MD/Kent County) 28 seconds later. Goals by junior attackman Eric Kuehn (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) and Rentch capped off the scoring for Washington.

Rentch's six-point day paced all scorers. Berger finished the day with four goals for WC, while Fellows finished with a goal and two assists. Spivey contributed a pair of goals.
