| | | | Current Record : (9-2) | Current Record : (5-5) | | | | Team Page For 2006 | Team Page For 2006 | | | | | | The Game Story: | CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Tenth-ranked host Washington College outscored visiting Franklin & Marshall, 5-2, in the second half to pull away from the Diplomats in a 10-6 Centennial Conference men's lacrosse victory this afternoon at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shoremen improved to 9-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play with the win, while the Diplomats fell to 5-5 and 1-3 with the loss.
The Shoremen clung to a 5-4 lead at halftime despite outshooting the Diplomats, 31-16, over the first 30 minutes. Washington opened up the lead in the third quarter as sophomore attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) fired in goal with 9:24 to play in the period and then found sophomore midfielder Andrew Generazio (Springfield, VA/West Springfield/Bridgton, ME) for a score with 8:38 remaining the push the lead to 7-4. Colin Molloy scored off a Mike Down assist for F&M with 2:45 to go in the third to cut the lead to 7-5.
Washington scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to stretch the lead to 9-5. Senior attackman Sam Lane (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) scored with 13:29 left and Read found sophomore attacker Mike Sutter (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) for a goal with 7:34 on the clock. F&M's final goal came with 6:12 remaining as Phil Schellhorn assisted on a goal by John Short. Read scored off an assist from Sutter just 14 seconds later to account for the final 10-6 margin.
Read scored two goals and assisted on three others, while Lane scored three goals and tallied one assist for the Shoremen. Sutter added one goal and one assist for Washington. Short scored two goal for F&M, while Down finished with one goal and one assist.
Senior goalie Kevin Thibadeau (Cheshire, CT/Avon Old Farms) made 13 saves for the Shoremen in the win, while Tim Kjeldgaaard made 18 stops for the Diplomats.
Washington held a 45-29 advantage in shots in the game and a 40-23 edge in clears. The Shoremen also won 14 of the game's 19 face-offs, including all eight face-offs in the second half. Freshman midfielder Thayer Damm (Huntington Valley, PA/LaSalle) was 14-for-16 on face-offs for Washington and scooped up a game-high eight ground balls.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at Haverford.
