statement today with a dominating 18-7 win over visiting Nazareth, the
third-ranked team in Division III. The Shoremen (3-0), who lost to the Golden
Flyers (0-1) 8-4 last season, scored at least four goals in three of the four
quarters in today's contest. Senior attackmen Jon Fellows (Millington, MD/Kent
County) led the way for the Shoremen with a five-goal, five assist day.
Nazareth struck first in the game when junior attackman Justin Wahl (Penn Yan,
NY/Penn Yan) scored off a feed from sophomore attackman Justin Reeves (Cicero,
NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) with 11:48 to play in the opening quarter. WC
sophomore midfielder Brent Renner (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) evened the score
off of Fellows's first assist of the game with 9:38 to go in the period. The
teams exchanged goals again before Nazareth senior midfielder Jared Koopman
(Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) scored off a pass from junior midfielder Erik Sullivan
(Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) to give the Golden Flyers their final lead of the game
at 3-2 with 4:56 left in the period.
The Shoremen opened things up in the second quarter by scoring the first three
goals, all unassisted. Fellows scored at 14:31 and again 19 seconds later and
senior midfielder Brad Hopkins (Kennedyville, MD/Kent County) followed at 11:38
to give the Shoremen a 5-3 lead. Wahl scored to cut lead back to one with 8:08
to go, but the Shoremen scored three goals in 38 seconds near the end of the
half to open up an 8-4 edge at the break. The second of those goals
materialized in just 13 seconds as Hopkins won a face-off and senior defenseman
Jeremy Shannon (Brookeville, MD/Sherwood) scooped up the ground ball, raced
down field and passed off to Fellows, who shoveled in a shot for the goal.
In the second half, Golden Flyer senior attackman Avery Burke (Homer, NY/Homer)
scored off a Wahl assist at 11:49, but the Shoremen would score the next six
goals to put the game away. When Fellows scored his final goal of the day off a
Hopkins assist to cap off the run, the Shoremen took a 14-5 lead with 8:58 left
in the game. Renner scored the final goal of the game, unassisted, with 2:53 to
play, to give the Shoremen their largest lead of the day and finish off the
18-7 win.
Washington held a 49-30 advantage in shots, but took 33 of its shots in the
first half. In the second half, the Shoremen shot just 16 times, but fired with
deadly accuracy, connecting ten times in the half (62.5%). The Shoremen also
held 55-38 edge in ground balls in the contest and won 17 of 26 face-offs. The
Golden Flyers were whistled for 15 penalties in the game, including eight in
the fourth quarter alone.
Fellows's ten-point performance bested his nine-point effort against Widener
two weeks ago. Senior attackman Craig Rentch (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) handed
out three assists and scored a goal of his own, while sophomore midfielder
Stephen Berger (Jessup, MD/Mount St. Joseph) and Renner each netted three
goals. Junior midfielder Chris Edwards (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin) and
sophomore midfielder Randy Vane (Sparks, MD/Gilman School) each added two goals
for WC, while Hopkins finished with one goal and one assist. Freshman
goalkeeper Alex Pirani (Woburn, MA/Winchester/Bridgton Academy, ME) made nine
saves and allowed seven goals before being pulled with 54 seconds left.
Wahl led Nazareth with two goals and two assists. Burke and Koopman each added
two goals, while Sullivan wound up with a pair of assists.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. game against Messiah
at Duke University.
