12-8 victory over ninth-ranked Western Maryland today in a Centennial Conference semifinal game at
Gettysburg College. The Shoremen (11-2) will play top-ranked Gettysburg in the championship game
Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Gettysburg defeated Franklin & Marshall in the other semifinal, 7-6.
The Shoremen opened the scoring with 10:52 to play in the first when senior attackman Craig Rentch
(Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) scored off a pass from junior midfielder Jeremy Shannon (Brookeville,
MD/Sherwood). The only other goal in the period came with 47 seconds on the clock when Western
Maryland sophomore midfielder Pete Shaffer (Sykesville, MD/South Carroll) tied the game off an assist
from sophomore midfielder Jeremy Freed (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin).
WC controlled the middle two periods, scoring the next seven goals. Sophomore midfielder Stephen
Berger (Jessup, MD/Mount St. Joseph), Shannon, and junior attackman Eric Kuehn (Bel Air, MD/C.
Milton Wright) each scored one goal in the second quarter as WC outshot the Green Terror, 14-1, and
took a 4-1 lead at the break.
The Shoremen added four more goals in the third, all unassisted. Berger opened the scoring at 12:34,
sophomore midfielder Michael Dyal (West Palm Beach, FL/The Hotchkiss School, CT) followed at
9:54, freshman midfielder Jon Spivey (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) scored at 9:29, and Rentch pushed the
lead to 8-1 at 5:56. The Green Terror (12-2) finally got back on the scoreboard with 28 seconds to play
as junior attackman Joe Ellis (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) scored off a feed from freshman attacker
Rob Weaver (Laurel, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti).
Western Maryland struck quickly in the fourth. Freed scored at 13:52 and senior attacker Tom Brown
(Laurel, MD/Hammond) followed just 40 seconds later to cut the lead to 8-4. WC answered with goals
from sophomore midfielder Brent Renner (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) and Kuehn to push the lead to
10-4 with 5:17 left. The Green Terror than scored two more quick goals, including Brown's second with
4:16 left to cut the lead back to 10-6. Rentch than scored off a pass from Spivey at 3:22, but Shaffer
countered after taking a feed from Weaver at 2:48. Rentch ended any hope of a Western Maryland
comeback with an unassisted goal 38 seconds later. Brown rounded out the scoring with seven seconds
left to provide the final margin of 12-8.
Rentch's four-goal, one-assist day led the Shoremen, who avenged a 15-14 double-overtime loss last
Saturday to the Green Terror. Berger added two goals and one assist, while Kuehn scored twice. Senior
midfielder Brad Hopkins (Kennedyville, MD/Kent County) won 14 of his 18 face-offs. Brown finished
with three goals for WMC, while Shaffer had two.
Gettysburg defeated WC, 10-7, when the two teams met earlier this season. The Bullets and Shoremen
are the only two champions the Centennial Conference has ever known. |
