and Craig Rentch (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) combined for nine goals and eight
assists as the tenth-ranked Washington College Shoremen opened their season
with a 17-9 win over visiting Widener this afternoon at Kibler Field. The
Shoremen outshot the Pioneers, 47-28, and led by as many as 12 goals in the
fourth quarter.
Rentch, who finished with six assists, scored both of his goals on the day in
the opening quarter. His pair of unassisted markers gave WC a 2-0 lead midway
through the period. Widener junior attackman Greg Butler (Broomall, PA/Cardinal
O'Hara) scored off a pass from freshman midfielder Ryan Boothe (Clifton,
VA/Centreville) with 2:38 to go in the quarter pulled the Pioneers to within
one at the end of the period.
Shoreman junior attackman Eric Kuehn (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) scored off
a Rentch assist just eight seconds into the second quarter. That goal was a
sign of things to come in the period as Washington outscored Widener, 6-2.
Fellows scored his first three goals of the game in the quarter, including an
unassisted tally with 41 seconds to go before the break that upped the lead to
8-3.
After Widener junior midfielder Kyle Swezey (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven)
scored with 11:51 left in the third to cut the lead back to four, the Shoremen
went on a tear. Washington scored seven unanswered goals, including three in a
row by Fellows, over the next 17 minutes. When Kuehn scored off another Rentch
assist with 9:07 left, the Shoremen had put the game away and were up 15-4.
Widener cut the lead back to ten, but two more WC goals, including Fellows's
seventh of the day, gave the Shoremen their biggest lead at 17-5. Widener
scored four goals off of the Shoremen's back-up goalies in the final 4:02 to
provide the final margin.
Rentch's six assists were two more than the Pioneers totaled as a team. Fellows
added a pair of assists to go along with his seven goals. Kuehn tallied four
goals, while sophomore midfielder Stephen Berger finished with two goals and
one assist.
Swezey's two-goal, one-assist afternoon led the Pioneers. Boothe tallied a pair
of assists, while sophomore attackman Eric Blake (Winter Springs, FL/Winter
Springs) scored two goals for the Pioneers.
Freshman goalkeeper Alex Pirani (Woburn, MA/Winchester/Bridgton Academy, ME)
made 11 saves and allowed five goals in 55 minutes of play for the Shoremen.
Sophomore Don Manard (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) went the distance for Widener
and made 17 stops.
The Shoremen return to action next Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. game at
fifth-ranked Washington & Lee.
