The Game Story:
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Trailing 3-1 at the end of the first period, sixth-ranked Hampden-Sydney scored five straight goals in the second quarter and maintained the lead for an 8-5 win over fifth-ranked Washington and Lee in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (7-3, 3-1) opened the scoring just 1:18 into the game as junior midfielder Tom Melanson (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) found the net off an assist from freshman attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport). The Tigers answered at the 7:15 mark as junior midfielder Jason Rostan (Farmville, Va./Prince Edward) notched an unassisted tally. W&L ended the quarter with a pair of goals 10 seconds apart for a 3-1 lead. Melanson scored unassisted with 34 seconds remaining, while sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) scored off an assist from Molinelli with 24 seconds left.

The Tigers (10-1, 4-0) then outscored W&L 5-0 in the second quarter for a 6-3 halftime lead. Sophomore attackman Matt Fassnacht (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) scored two goals during the stretch for H-SC.

The teams exchanged two goals each during the third period and played the fourth quarter scoreless for the 8-5 final.

W&L was led by Melanson's two goals and Molinelli's two assists. Fink tallied one goal and one assist while sophomore Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) stopped nine shots in net.

Fassnacht, Rostan and junior attackman Chris Lucas (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) paced the Tigers with two goals each. Junior midfielder Wilson McIlwaine (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) recorded one goal and one assist. Sophomore Jeremy Bull (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) stopped 11 shots between the pipes.

For the game, W&L outshot the Tigers, 23-20, while H-SC held a 48-42 advantage in ground balls.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Wednesday as it travels to Ashland, Va., for a 4:00 pm game against Randolph-Macon.
