| | | | Current Record : (8-6) | Current Record : (11-6) | | | | Go to team page > | Go to team page > | | | | | | The Game Story: | LEXINGTON, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan senior attackman Maicin Dunk (Towson, Md./Towson) scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Shawn Fitchpatrick (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) with 2:31 remaining in the game to lift the third-seeded Marlins to a 13-12 victory over second-seeded and 19th-ranked Washington and Lee in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
The goal occurred in transition immediately following a sequence in which VWC senior goalkeeper Tom Skartsiaris (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) stopped two point-blank shots to keep the game knotted at 12-12.
Washington and Lee had taken a 10-7 lead with 51 seconds left in the third quarter following a three-goal run that included a pair of scores from senior attackman Will Englehart (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney). However, the Marlins (11-6) responded with their own three-goal spurt that included two goals from junior midfielder Drew Langis (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), to knot the game at 10-10 with 8:57 left in the game. The teams traded the lead three times in the remainder of the period, including Dunk’s game-winner.
Washington and Lee was led by Englehart, who totaled four goals. Junior midfielders Harry St. John (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) and Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson) each scored two goals, while sophomore attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) notched three assists. Junior Connor Locke (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) logged 12 saves in goal.
Virginia Wesleyan, which posted its first-ever win over the Generals in 18 tries, was paced by senior attackmen Jordan Kenney (Linthicum, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and Brett Morris (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), who posted three goals and one assist each. Dunk and Langis added two goals and two assists apiece. Skartsiaris totaled 17 saves in between the pipes. Washington and Lee’s season now comes to an end with a 9-6 overall record.
Virginia Wesleyan will advance to the ODAC title game, where it will meet Lynchburg College on Sunday at 1:00 pm in Lynchburg, Va. |
