The Game Story:
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Tenth-ranked Washington College jumped out to a 5-1 first quarter lead and staved off a late rally from fifth-ranked Washington and Lee to post a 9-8 win over the Generals in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.

The Shoremen (2-0) opened their early lead as sophomore midfielder Stephen Berger (Jessup, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) and senior attackman Craig Rentch (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) both scored two goals in the opening period.

The Generals (2-1) climbed back to within 5-3 with 9:31 remaining in the opening half as sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) and sophomore midfielder Mark McLewee (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) scored back-to-back goals. However, Washington would outscore W&L, 3-2, in the final minutes of the first half to take an 8-5 lead at the break.

The two teams played a scoreless third period before W&L got on the board with 9:51 remaining in the game on an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Mike McNamara (Hunt Valley, Md./Loyola). The Shoremen again responded just 1:56 later as junior attackman Eric Kuehn (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) scored off a rebound for a 9-6 lead. The Generals then mounted a furious rally late with McNamara scoring unassisted at the 3:22 mark and sophomore midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) scoring off an assist from senior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) with 1:05 remaining. W&L won the ensuing faceoff and set up a play, but Martin's shot in the final seconds was saved by Washington freshman goalie Alex Pirani (Woburn, Mass./Winchester) to preserve the win for the Shoremen.

The Generals were led by Fink and McNamara, who scored two goals each. Moore and Martin both contributed a goal and an assist. Sophomore Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) stopped eight shots in goal for the Generals.

Berger led Washington with three goals, while Rentch notched two goals and an assist. Pirani posted 15 saves in goal for the Shoremen.

For the game, W&L held a 43-23 advantage in shots, including a 26-9 edge in the second half. However, the Shoremen won 14-of-19 faceoffs on the afternoon.

Washington and Lee will return to action next Saturday as the Generals host second-ranked Gettysburg at 1:30 pm.
