But once the Sea Gulls clicked on all cylinders they scored at will on the Wolverines en route to a 21-4 victory.
The win extends Salisbury's CAC winning streak to 91-games, which includes the conference tournament games, and 72 regular-season conference victories. The Sea Gulls (3-0, 1-0 CAC) have also won 65 straight regular-season games.
This was the CAC debut for the Wolverines (0-2, 0-1 CAC) and the second straight ranked opponent for Wesley. The Wolverines opened their season last Saturday with a near upset of No. 11 Washington College as the Shoremen won 8-7.
Sophomore Jake DeLillo (three goals) got Salisbury on the board at the 1:43 mark in the first quarter with his first goal as a Sea Gull off an assist from senior Matt Hickman (three goals, two assists). DeLillo, a transfer from NYIT, struck again just over a minute later. This time senior Kevin Kustron would assist DeLillo. The Gulls won the ensuing face-off and scored in 10 seconds as senior long-stick midfielder Ryan Browning found Hickman for the quick goal.
The Sea Gulls took an 8-0 lead into halftime as their last three goals were man-up scores by juniors Stephen Krasco (two goals), twice, and Patrick Bonanno (two goals). All man-up goals were assisted by junior Kylor Berkman (two goals, four assists).
Salisbury started the third quarter like it finished the second quarter with a man-up strike as Berkman scored off a Hickman feed. The Sea Gulls were a perfect 4-for-4 on man-up opportunities today.
SU would score two more times to extend its lead to 11-0 before the Wolverines got on the board at the 10:14 mark on a Nick Pisacano goal. The Sea Gulls scored the next five goals to extend their lead to 16-1 early in the fourth quarter. Wesley scored three of the next four goals before the SU bench finished the game with four consecutive goals to close out the game.
Salisbury outshot Wesley 57-15 and won 22-of-29 face-offs. The Sea Gulls' defense caused 34 Wesley turnovers as SU scooped up 52 ground balls.
Salisbury senior Greg Titus (two goals) was the other Sea Gull to score at least two goals in the win. Junior goalie Riley Clark (4-0) made one save in the game for Salisbury.
The Sea Gulls will next travel to Widener University on Saturday, March 1, for a non-conference contest at 1 p.m. |
