SPARTAN FIELD-YORK COLLEGE-YORK, PA-The York College men's
lacrosse team dropped a tough 12-3 CAC decision to Mary Washington on
Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field.
Mary Washington jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter. At 14:01, Mary
Washington tallied first and there was more to come from them. The Eagles had a
3-0 lead at the 4:57 mark of the first quarter. With 3:41 left in the opening quarter,
York finally broke out of their scoring drought as Ryan Wynne (Mt. Airy, MD/
South Carroll) found the back of the net with his fourth goal of the year. After
Mary Washington struck back to go up 5-1, the green and white got the final tally
of the quarter, with senior Scott Hermes (New Freedom, PA/ Mervo) picking up
his 19th goal of the year.
Mary Washington tallied all three goals of the second quarter to lead 8-2 at the
half.
Both teams came out of the half looking determined, as the Spartans tried to climb
back in the game. MWC's David Justen scored the first goal of the second half at
13:44. Hermes would find the net one more time in this game, scoring York's final
goal at the 6:29 mark of the third quarter. York tried their best with a strong
defensive effort in the second half as they limited the Eagles to only four goals in
the second half but it was just a case of Mary Washington scoring too many to
early and the Eagle defense playing well against the green and white.
York was led by Hermes, as the senior standout continues his steady play with
two goals and an assist. Fellow senior Wynne scored the other Spartan goal of the
game. The only other member of the green and white to record a point in today's
match-up was Ricky Cherba (Annapolis, MD/ Annapolis) with his assist on
Hermes' second goal. York got 14 saves from the goalie tandem of Evan
Mazzocchi (Swathmore, PA/ Sachem) and David Jacques (Arnold, MD/
Broadneck).
Mary Washington got another big game from Matt Wiles as he had two goals and
an assist. Justen recorded two goals in the game. Mark Malone and Will Gunther
had a goal and an assist for the Eagles. Ten different Eagles scored at least one
goal as MWC featured a very diverse attack.
Mary Washington outshot York 39-15, while they just sneaked by the Spartans in
ground balls, 58-53.
The Spartans, now 2-3 and 1-3 in the CAC, return to action when they travel to
Marymount for a make-up game on Monday, March 25th. Game time in Arlington
is set for 3:30.
