Ursinus College Men's Lacrosse

Strong second half start dooms Ursinus in loss to Skidmore, 11-4

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Visiting Skidmore scored eight straight goals in the second half as the Thoroughbreds defeated Ursinus (2-3) 11-4 Saturday afternoon in men’s lacrosse action.

Skidmore broke open a 3-3 halftime stalemate with three goals in the first 3:48. Junior midfielder Tom Levesque scored two of the goals during that time frame, as he scored unassisted at 14:31 to make the score 4-3.

The game-winning goal came with 12:59 left as junior attack Nick Coppola scored on an assist from sophomore midfielder Cory Barkoff. Coppola and Levesque both finished with two goals, as did sophomore attack Rob Lutin and sophomore attack Matt Levesque.

Barkoff and Coppola had two assists for Skidmore.

Ursinus started the game by taking a 2-0 lead as senior attack Justin Reinke (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) scored with 10:37 left to go in period one. Sophomore attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) scored with 6:37 left on an assist from senior midfielder Dane Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood).

Skidmore tied the score with two goals in the last six minutes of the first period. Freshman midfielder Ben Cornell scored with 6:01 left on a Matt Levesque assist, with Barkoff scoring on a extra-man opportunity with 3:35 left.

With Skidmore holding a 3-2 lead late in the second quarter, Mangin scored unassisted with nine seconds left to tie the score at 3-all. Mangin would also add an extra-man goal with 2:45 left in the game. Reinke had the assist.

Ursinus had 43 ground balls in the contest, compared to 40 for Skidmore. Ursinus junior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood) had five groundballs. Aquilino made 16 saves in the loss.

For Skidmore, senior midfielder Rob Martin had six groundballs. Sophomore goalkeeper John Capitani made 14 saves in the win.

Ursinus will open Centennial Conference play on Wednesday night as the Bears host Swarthmore.
