COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Visiting Muhlenberg went 4-for-6 on extra-man opportunities on Saturday as the Mules (10-4, 5-3 Centennial) advanced to the Centennial Conference playoffs with a 9-8 win over Ursinus (7-9, 4-4 Centennial) in men’s lacrosse action.
Muhlenberg got what turned out to be the game-winning goal on a extra-man opportunity with senior midfielder Kyle Farris scored his third goal of the game with 3:26 left in the fourth on an assist from junior attack Nick Fletcher, giving the Mules a 9-7 lead.
Ursinus got back within one at 9-8 with 1:16 left as junior attack Greg Bacak (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) scored unassisted. Ursinus then got the ball back and had an extra-man opportunity with 12 seconds left. However, a shot by Bears’ sophomore attack Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, PA/Pottsgrove) was saved by Mules’ sophomore goalie Andrew Bell with just two seconds left.
For Ursinus, senior attack Dane Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood) finished his final game for the Bears with two goals and an assist, with freshman midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) adding in two goals of his own.
Ursinus struck first as Gillen scored with 9:43 left in the opening period on an assist from junior midfielder Jason Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield).
The Mules answered back with three straight goals, including two from freshman attack Brent Siebald, to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. Kyle Farris scored the last goal of the run, with 15 seconds left in the first, on a man-up opportunity.
The Bears got back within one as Eric Farris, the brother of Kyle, scored on an assist from sophomore attack Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) with 13:33 left for a 3-2 deficit.
Kyle Farris would then score his second goal of the day, on another man-up opportunity, to give Muhlenberg a 4-2 lead with 10:45 left in the first half
Mangin scored his first goal of the day at 3:49 left until halftime to keep the Bears within striking distance at 4-3.
After Muhlenberg senior midfielder Mike Brown scored with 1:13 left to give the Mules a 5-3 lead, Ursinus scored two goals in 20 seconds, starting with a goal from freshman midfielder Jeff Leonard (Ambler, PA/Germantown Academy) with 29 seconds left.
On the next faceoff, freshman midfielder Matt Angle (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) raced the length of the field and scored unassisted with nine seconds left to send the game to a 5-5 tie at the half.
In the third, Muhlenberg jumped back on top 6-5 with a goal from junior midfielder John DeLuca with 12:08 left.
Ursinus tied the score again at 6-all when Mangin scored with 7:15 left unassisted, but, Muhlenberg scored again at 5:29 left as junior attack Andrew Lolley scored with 5:29 left on a Siebold assist. The Bears would tie the score at 7-all when Gillen scored with 1:46 left.
Brown would score with 7:27 left in the fourth to give Muhlenberg a 9-7 lead.
Defensively, senior defender Eric Hoffman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) had a game-high eight groundballs and four caused turnovers. In goal, junior goalkeeper Tony Aquilino (Abington, PA/Archbishop Wood) had 13 saves |
