The Game Story:
WestConn No Match for Keene State In 14-5 Loss

DANBURY, CT (Apr. 12) – When junior Vincent Bevilacqua (Branford, CT) scored an unassisted goal with :44 seconds remaining in the first half it did little to change the momentum Keene State had established by scoring the game’s first eight goals. Less than :30 seconds later, Keene’s Josh Nugent (Cheshire, CT) scored his fourth goal of the half to make the half-time score 9-1 in favor of Keene State over Western Connecticut State University at the WestConn Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.

Vincent Bevilacqua led WestConn with two goals, while sophomore Andrew Barbieri (Islip Terrace, NY), senior Tom Nahornick (Groton, CT), and senior Mat Castelot (Branford, CT) each scored once in a losing effort for the Colonials. Senior Ron Pac (Glastonbury, CT) assisted on two of the Colonials’ five goals on the afternoon.

Leading the attack for Keene State were Nugent and Tony Santa Fe (Deery, NH) who each scored four goals. Ryan Hazelton (Chester, NH) and Casey Broderson (Deery, NH) each contributed two goals for the victorious Owls. Peter Lauranzano (Beverly, MA) led Keene State in assists with three.

Keene State wasted no time taking the lead with an unassisted goal by Michael Fontaine (Wolfboro, NH) less than two minutes into the game. Nugent and Santa Fe scored six of the Owls’ next eight goals leaving little doubt about the game’s result.

Keene State struck first in the second half with two goals to take an 11-1 lead, but WestConn scored the next three goals to win the third period by a 3-2 score. Santa Fe scored his third and fourth goals to open the fourth period and Keene State cruised to victory and a final score of 14-5.

Matt Johnson (Deery, NH) earns his seventh win of the season in goal for Keen State, while junior Kyle Wood (Hyde Park, NY) takes the loss for WestConn.

With this afternoon’s victory, Keene State’s record now stands at 7-0 on the season (4-0 in the LEC), while WestConn falls to 7-5 (2-2 LEC)

WestConn hosts Salem State at the WestConn Athletic Complex on Tuesday, April 15th. Game time is slated for 7:00pm
