The Game Story:
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport’s men’s lacrosse team won its third straight match holding off a late rally by Eastern (PA), 9-7, Saturday afternoon at Captains Field.



The Eagles struck first just 1:15 into the game but the Captains rallied to score twice to lead 2-1 after the first period. CNU scored the first goal of the second quarter to take a 3-1 before Eastern tallied two goals to tie the score at 3-3. The score remained tied, 4-4, at the half.



Christopher Newport owned the third period as they scored four times and did not give a goal to lead 8-4 at the end of the third. The Captains scored the first goal in the fourth and the Eagles scored three times in the final 5:28 to provide the final margin.



Ryan Merrell led the Captains with three goals and one assist. Justin King scored twice and assisted on two others. Patrick Cavanaugh also scored twice while Jon Ims finished with one goal and one assist. Matt Gleisner scored once and Jackson Kibler had one assist.



CNU out-shot Eastern, 36-27. Matt Miller had 10 saves in goal for the Captains.



The Eagles fall to 0-6 on the year while Christopher Newport improves to 4-3. CNU has a week off and returns to action next Saturday when they head to St. Mary’s (MD) with face-off set for 1 pm.
