The Game Story:

CARY, N.C. – Looking to snap their two-game losing streak, the Rochester Rattlers entered Saturday’s game against the two-time defending MLL champion Philadelphia Barrage searching for a season series sweep for the first time in five years. With help from Casey Powell and Joe Walters, the Rattlers were able to accomplish both tasks with a 20-17 victory at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Powell scored three goals with five assists while Walters tallied five goals with an assist en route to Bud Light MVP honors.

The Rattlers and the Barrage tied the score three times in the opening 11 minutes before Powell gave Rochester a 4-3 advantage with a goal with 3:04 in the opening period. With 1:24 remaining in the period, Walters ignited a three-goal run in a span of 57 seconds with the first of two straight goals, a power-play marker off a feed from John Grant, Jr.

As time expired in the first quarter, Peter Trombino scored a two-point goal from the right wing to pull the Barrage to within 7-5.

Ryan Boyle and Michael Springer scored back-to-back goals to start the second quarter, tying the game at 7-7. However, the Rattlers scored five of the final six goals to end the first half with a 12-8 advantage. Grant scored two goals during the run.

After Brett Bucktooth opened the third quarter with a goal off a pass from Gavin Prout, the Barrage scored five of the next seven goals to close the margin to 15-13 as five different Philadelphia players recorded goals past Rochester netminder Mike Levin.

Trailing by two to start the fourth quarter, the Barrage scored three straight goals in the first five minutes to post their first lead since the first quarter, but Rochester quickly answered with three straight goals of its own to lead by 18-16 with 7:24 remaining.

Matt Striebel scored off a pass from Bobby Horsey with 6:34 remaining to cut the Barrage deficit to 18-17, but Walters and Jeff Zywicki sealed the victory for Rochester with two goals just 36 seconds apart.

While Powell and Walters led the Rochester offense, Bucktooth added a four-goal effort while Grant, the league’s leading scorer, tallied two goals with two assists.

Striebel led Philadelphia with four goals while Trombino added the two-point marker.
