The Game Story:
Rochester, August 1… The Rochester Rattlers clinched the Eastern Conference title with a 17-13 victory over the Long Island Lizards tonight at PAETEC Park. The Rattlers’ win was their fourth straight and locked up the team’s second conference crown in eight seasons.

The Rattlers were led by Colin Doyle with three goals and three assists, en route to Bud Light Player of the Game honors. Jordan Hall, Jeff Zywicki, and Casey Powell each had two goals and two assists each for the Rattlers to help with the win. Rookie goalkeeper Brett Queener displayed a spirted-effort as he held Long Island to four goals and made 13 saves in the second half to earn his second win of the season. The rookie replaced Mike Levin, who took Rochester into halftime tied 9-9.

The Lizards were led by Ben Rubeor and Spencer Ford, each with five points in the game.

The Lizards started off the game with an unassisted goal by Ford to lead 1-0, their only lead of the night. The Rattlers answered back with two goals by John Grant and Powell to lead 2-1. Long Island tied the game with another unassisted goal by Ford with just under five to play in the quarter. The Rattlers took back the lead a minute later with a power play goal by Doyle, but the Lizards answered back again with two minutes left for a 3-3 tie. After a disallowed goal for the Lizards for a crease violation, Brett Bucktooth scored for the Rattlers to lead once again 4-3.

After a successful penalty kill in the first minute and a half of the second, the Rattlers’ Doyle scored his second of the night for a 5-3 lead. Hall added another goal with the assist from Powell. Long Island’s Tim Goettelmann scored with just under 12 minutes left in the quarter, but the Rattlers countered with two goals by Grant, and a hat trick goal by Doyle to give the Rattlers an 8-4 lead. Long Island’s Rubeor scored a goal to cut the lead by one. The Rattlers countered under a minute later with Powell’s second of the night to give the Rattlers a 9-5 lead. Long Island responded with four goals, including the hat trick by Rubeor, to tie the game at 9-9.

In the third, the Rattlers and Lizards exchanged two goals each to keep the game tied 11-11, including Rochester tallies from by Gavin Prout and Andrew Spack. The Rattlers took back the lead with Hall’s second of the night, and then added another by Chris Schiller, unassisted, for a 13-11 score. The Rattlers extended their lead by five with goal by Zywicki, Prout, and Schiller’s second of the night, to end the third quarter with a 16-11 lead.

In a low scoring fourth quarter, Long Island started the scoring with two goals by Goettelmann, his third and fourth of the night, to cut the lead to 16-13. The Rattlers answered back with a goal by Zywicki with five minutes left to play, his second, to give the Rattlers the win 17-13.

The Rochester Rattlers travel to play the Chicago Machine on Sunday, August 10th at 4:30 p.m. EST at Toyota Park, as they close out the 2008 MLL regular season. The Rattlers are 1-0 all-time against the Machine.
