This win gives the Outlaws a 1-0 record, while the Riptide fall to a 0-1 record.
Midfielder Brian Langtry earned the Bud Light MVP honors with four goals, including one 2-pt goal, and three assists.
The game started off well for the Riptide with a goal at 1:47 from Michael Watson. However, at 5:18 into the first quarter, Jeff Sonke answered the Riptide goal. This was soon to be followed by another goal from his teammate, Drew Westervelt, assisted by Nate Watkins in his first game as an Outlaw. Riptide Midfielder Kevin Harrison did not let that goal go unanswered, and at 7:40 scored a goal unassisted, tying the game. With three more goals by Denver and one by Los Angeles, it seemed that the quarter would end with the Riptide down two goals. However, with 16 seconds left, Greg Downing closed the margin by one.
The Outlaws didn’t let their lead get away, and scored eight consecutive goals, beginning with Matt Hanna’s goal at 2:34 and ending with a goal by Sonke at 13:35. With the score 13-4, the Riptide needed a goal, and they got it with Matt Casey’s goal to finish out the half.
Los Angeles kept their momentum going with two goals to open up the second half, one by J.J. Morrissey and the other by Chazz Woodson. But those goals were answered by the Outlaws’ power-play goal by Matt Brown and Hanna’s goal at 8:21. Finishing out the quarter, Terry Riordan of the Riptide scored a goal, only to be followed by Denver’s Geoff Snider.
Attackman Brendan Mundorf’s quarter-opening goal was answered by the Riptide’s Casey at 4:48. The two Denver goals by Hanna and Westervelt followed up Casey’s goal, widening the margin by nine. But on a power-play, Riordan scored at 10:59 making the margin eight. With 2:08 left in the game, Brown scored with an assist by Westervelt, bringing the final score to 22-12. |
