For the second time this season, the No. 12 Syracuse men's lacrosse team (3-1, 1-0 ACC) erased a five-goal deficit over a top-12 team, downing No. 11 Virginia (4-2, 0-1 ACC) 14-13. 'Cuse took its first lead over the Cavaliers with 15.1 seconds to go on a goal by Sergio Salcido to propel the Orange to its first conference victory of the 2017 season. Salcido (2-3), Matt Lane (3-2) and Nate Solomon (3-2) each recorded five-point efforts on the day, with Evan Molloy stopping 12 shots in cage. Ben Williams also became the program's all-time ground balls leader (287) with his seven on the day. He passed Joel White (283) for the program record. "It was a good game for college lacrosse. It was up-and-down, and certainly a big win for us," said head coach John Desko. "It's not often you can win a game by one goal having the ground ball discrepancy like we did in this game. I thought our guys played hard the whole way, especially in the second half being down like we were down. To be able to pick away at it and get back into it, and win it at the end, is a great win for Syracuse today. I'm proud of the way our guys played down the stretch." Despite losing the ground ball battle 43-27 and being held scoreless for the entirety of the second quarter, the Orange surged back down the stretch, scoring nine of the game's last 12 goals. The Orange has trailed by four-or-more goals in each of its last-three games, coming back to at least knot things up in the fourth quarter in all-three. Syracuse is 2-1 in those matchups. Virginia jumped out to an early lead, capitalizing on winning the opening faceoff and scoring less than a minute into the game from the stick of Ryan Conrad. The Cavaliers would make it two nearly four minutes later, as Michael Kraus assisted Dox Aitken for the man. The Orange bounced back on a highlight reel catch and score from Nick Mariano, catching an errant pass from Sergio Salcido before beating the goalie for the team's first goal of the day. The Cavaliers responded, as Zed Williams scored on an assist from Aitken on the following possession to give Virginia a 3-1 lead. Narrowing the gap back to one, the Orange scored again with 4:52 to play in the period. Following a caused turnover by Austin Fusco, Salcido led a fast break and found Jordan Evans alone on the crease for the goal. Back-and-forth play ensued, with AJ Fish making it a two-goal game in favor of the Cavaliers only 30 seconds later. With 2:39 to go in the first, the Orange responded yet again. This time, Peter Dearth did the damage, scoring his first collegiate goal. The Orange made it two in a row to close the gap and knot things at four with 1:14 remaining, as Matt Lane finished off a fast break with a bouncing shot from the top of the box. In the second period, the Cavaliers struck first again, as Aitken assisted Mike D'Amario to push Virginia back ahead. Michael Kraus added another for the Hoos less than two minutes later, extending the lead to 6-4. Numerous saves on both sides held the teams scoreless for the following 7:27, before Kraus broke the drought with a goal for Virginia to push the lead to three. Kraus scored his third straight with time dwindling in the half, giving the Cavaliers an 8-4 advantage with 2:24 to go. The half would end with Virginia holding a four-goal lead over the Orange. Out of the halftime locker room, Syracuse scored its first goal since the first period, as Nate Solomon caught a ball from Lane and beat the Virginia goalie from right in front of the cage. Aitken netted his second goal of the day less than a minute later, pushing the lead back to four for the Hoos. Williams would also collect his second of the day, with 11:06 to go in the quarter, giving Virginia a five-goal lead, its largest of the day. Nearly seven minutes of scoreless play from both sides ended with a goal from Jamie Trimboli for the Orange's second of the period. The lead would cut back to three with 3:56 to play, as Tyson Bomberry found Solomon from midfield. The streaking Solomon finished for a man-down goal, the first by the Orange since April 2, 2015. Continuing the run, Lane found Brendan Bomberry on the crease for Syracuse's third straight goal. With 3:08 to go in the third, the Cavaliers' lead was cut to 10-8. The comeback continued as Lane converted a man-up opportunity for the Orange, his fourth point of the game. Salcido assisted on the play, for his third of the day. The Cavaliers finally struck back with just under a minute to play in the period, snapping 10-minute scoreless drought on Kraus's fourth goal. Virginia held the two-goal lead heading into the game's final quarter. As was the case in the prior period, the Orange struck first in the fourth, on a highlight reel goal from Solomon. Catching a pass from Nick Mariano with his back to the goal, Solmon fired a no-look backhand shot past the Virginia goalkeeper to cut the lead back to one. Salcido completed the come-from-behind effort for the Orange, tying the game for the first time since the 12:33 mark in the second quarter with his first goal of the game. However, Virginia responded quickly, as Ryan Conrad found the back of the net off the faceoff 10 seconds later. After closing a five-goal gap, the Orange fell behind again. Keeping true to the trend of the game, Ryan Simmons brought the Orange back with a goal assisted by Solomon. The goal came with 10:15 remaining, and knotted the game at 12. Three minutes later, the Cavaliers pushed back ahead, again from the stick of Aitken. Leading the Orange, Lane picked up his third goal of the day with 5:45 to go, evening the score yet again for Syracuse. The comeback was completed with 15.1 seconds left. Dodging a defender and creating some space for himself, Salcido fired the game-winning goal from the center of the field. Evan Molloy made 12 saves in the victory for the Orange, including four in the game's final eight minutes. The win gave the Orange an advantage in a deadlocked series, with 'Cuse improving to 17-16 all-time against the Hoos, out-scoring them 430-429 all-time in the 20th game that's been decided by two goals or less in a 33-game history.
