The Fairfield University men’s lacrosse team plays its first midweek game of 2017, heading to UMass Lowell for a Tuesday afternoon faceoff with the River Hawks. Action from Cushing Field begins at 3 p.m. Both Fairfield and UMass Lowell are looking to draw even at 2-2 on the 2017 campaign. The Stags are also vying for a 3-0 all-time series with the River Hawks. Fairfield’s Last Time Out A fast start by No. 14 Rutgers was enough to hold off the Stags on Saturday afternoon on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. 2016 First Team All-CAA goalkeeper Tyler Behring made a season-high 16 saves for Fairfield in the 8-3 defeat. Offensively, Fairfield got goals on the afternoon from Joe Rodrigues, Matt Sharpe and Alex Wagner with Colin Burke notching an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to 20 consecutive games. Rutgers, which rose to No. 10 in the USILA Coaches’ Poll on Monday afternoon, was led by Connor Murphy’s hat trick and two goals from Jeff George. Casey Rose added a goal and two assists for the Scarlet Knights. Scouting UMass Lowell The UMass Lowell River Hawks are 1-2 following their first win of the spring, an 18-13 home triumph over Siena this past Saturday. The River Hawks will be wrapping up a season-opening, four-game homestand against the Stags, having previously lost to in-state foes Boston University (18-8) and Harvard (14-9) on Cushing Field in 2017. The UMass Lowell attack is led by seven goals from Jon Phillips and five markers fired home by Austin Lane. Sean Tyrrell is the team’s top facilitator with nine assists along with four goals of his own to round out a team-leading 13 points through three games this spring. Grant Lardieri returns as the River Hawks’ starting goalkeeper in 2017 and has played 143:50 of 180 possible minutes in the cage thus far. He owns a 15.02 goals-against average and a .520 save percentage (36 goals allowed, 39 saves). Brett Dattilo has taken the majority of the faceoffs en route to a 38-of-78 (.487) showing with 16 ground balls. Will Puduski is 4-of-10 on the draw to round out UMass Lowell’s performance at the ‘X’. March 1, 2016: Fairfield 12, UMass Lowell 10 Six different Stags found the back of the net in a 12-10 victory over UMass Lowell on March 1, 2016 on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium. Jake Knostman and Drew Murray each registered a hat trick for the Stags. The victory saw Fairfield respond to an 8-7 deficit in the third period with a five-goal run to reclaim the lead for good. The Stags kept the River Hawks off the board for 14:28 of clock time, opening up a 12-8 edge before the visitors scratched out a pair of late markers to round out the final tally at 12-10. Fairfield was also led offensively by a player that didn’t rattle the cage as senior co-captain Charlie Schnider facilitated the Fairfield attack with a career-high five assists. Helping to keep the offense on the field was Will Fox, who had a career day at the faceoff ‘X’. Fox won a personal-best 20-of-25 draws and collected nine ground balls. J.B. Smith was also integral to the faceoff and defensive success of the Stags with a career-high six ground balls. UMass Lowell was led by four goals from Sam Klingsporn and a five-point showing (3g, 2a) by Sean Tyrrell. Grant Lardieri made nine saves for the River Hawks. Consistency Is Key Colin Burke enters Tuesday with a 20-game point streak, a run which encompasses every outing of his career to date. Currently, 25 Division I players own an active point streak of at least 20 consecutive contests. The national list is headlined by Ian MacKay of Vermont at 46 straight games, though he is currently injured and has not suited up for the Catamounts this spring. Of those 25 student-athletes, Burke is one of seven whose 20-game scoring streak spans his entire collegiate career. Michael LeClair of High Point leads that ledger with a point in all 45 games of his tenure with the Panthers.
