VILLANOVA, Pa. - The No. 2 seed Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (10-6, 4-1 BIG EAST) could not keep pace with the No. 1 seed Denver Pioneer (13-2, 5-0 BIG EAST) offense, falling 16-8 in the BIG EAST Championship Final on Saturday night at Villanova Stadium. Senior attack Bo Stafford (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) had one goal and four assists and freshman midfielder Craig Berge (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had two goals and one assist to earn All-BIG EAST Tournament Team honors. Freshman goalie Nick Marrocco (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) made the all-tournament team in a losing effort, with 20 saves over two games. The Blue & Gray scrapped at the faceoff X, but managed just 6-of-25, as the Pioneers controlled time of possession throughout the game. GU received an efficient performance from the offense keeping the Hoyas close through the first two quarters. Senior attack Reilly O'Connor (Brooklin, Ontario/The Hill Academy) struck first, scoring from the left side on a feed from Stafford to take a 1-0 lead at the 12:17 mark in the first quarter. The Pioneers wasted little time responding, as BIG EAST scoring leader Connor Cannizzaro scored twice during a 4-0 run through the next five minutes, to put Georgetown behind by three. Stafford ended the rally scoring an extra-man goal on the assist from Berge. Freshman attack Stephen Quinzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) brought Georgetown within one goal, converting sophomore midfielder Devon Lewis's (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) feed, to make the score 4-3 with 4:15 left in the first quarter. Denver used another four-goal run to take a five-goal lead, as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Wes Berg scored twice to make the score 8-3 with 11:59 remaining in the first half. Senior midfielder Mitch Hugdahl (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) broke up the run, taking a feed from freshman attack Zeke Morrill (Baltimore, Md./Gilman.Deerfield) and scoring on an extra-man opportunity bring GU within four, at 8-4, midway through the second quarter. Stafford responded after a Denver goal, wrapping around the cage and finding a waiting Berge, who scored to bring the Hoyas back within four. Stafford found a cutting Quinzi to bring the Blue & Gray within three, 9-6, with 3:35 left in the second quarter. Denver tacked on one final goal before the end of the half and scored the first goal of the third quarter. Lewis scored his first of the game on Stafford's fourth assist of the day at the 8:58 mark in the third, before the Pioneers added three goals by the end of the third quarter to open a seven-goal lead, at 14-7.
