For the fourth time in five years, the University of Denver men's lacrosse team will be taking part in Championship Weekend as the Pioneers punched their ticket to the Final Four by defeating Ohio State by a score of 15-13 on Saturday afternoon in front of 13,076 fans at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. The crowd was the sixth-largest in NCAA Men's Lacrosse Quarterfinal history. After falling behind 7-1 over the course of the opening 18 minutes of play, the Pioneers went on a 9-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish, ultimately taking the decision by a two-goal margin. No. 4 Denver will next face No. 1 Notre Dame next Saturday in NCAA Semifinal action. After OSU took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Colin Chell, Tewaaraton Award finalist Wes Berg (Coquitlam, B.C.) buried his 45th goal of 2015 in the third minute of play to tie things up at one apiece. The Buckeyes then went on a 5-0 run to take a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Ohio State went up 7-1 at the 2:35 mark of the second quarter on a goal by Carter Brown. Denver responded 2:45 later with Connor Cannizzaro (Cazenovia, N.Y) rifling home his 51st marker of the season. The Pios then tallied back-to-back goals courtesy of Zach Miller (Steamburg, N.Y.) and Max Planning (Alexandria, Va.), resultantly cutting their deficit to three with 6:51 remaining in the first half. A rocket of a shot from the stick of Berg pulled DU to within two of OSU at the 8:30 mark of the second quarter, with the senior attack then pulling the Pioneers to within immediate striking distance of their opponents a moment later on his third goal of the day. The 5-0 run by Denver to end the opening half made the score 7-6 in Ohio State's favor as Saturday's tilt reached its midway point. Denver tied the game up 7-7 in the opening minute of the third quarter when Erik Adamson (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) fired home the 32nd goal of his season. The fourth and fifth goals of the day by Berg then gave DU its first lead of the day as the Pios' scoring run stretched to 8-0. Berg then put the finishing touches on his sock trick, bouncing a hard shot past OSU goalie Tom Carey to make the score 10-7 in Denver's favor. The Buckeyes pulled back to within two of Denver with 1:30 remaining in the third quarter as Chell put an end to the Pios' run by netting the second tally of his day. Ohio State cut DU's lead to one a moment later when Johnny Pearson converted on a hard, low shot. Denver opened the fourth quarter strong as Sean Cannizzaro (Cazenovia, N.Y.) tallied back-to-back markers in the opening 1:35 of the stanza to put the Crimson & Gold up 12-9. The Buckeyes and Pioneers then traded goals as Denver took a 13-10 lead into the 50th minute of play. Colin Woolford (Norwalk, Conn.) put the Pios up 14-10 at the 5:40 mark of the fourth quarter, with OSU responding a moment to again cut its deficit to three. A huge save by goalie Ryan LaPlante (Fort Collins, Colo.) off of John Kelly kept DU's 14-11 advantage in tact shortly thereafter. Adamson then made the score 15-11 at the 27:56 mark of the second half, burying a feed from Jack Bobzien (Littleton, Colo.) to record his second goal of the afternoon.
