PHILADELPHIA – The No. 1-seeded Maryland men’s lacrosse team fell to North Carolina, 14-13, in overtime in the NCAA National Championship. Junior attackman Matt Rambo finished the day with six points on three goals and three assists, giving him 23 points during the tournament, which set a new program record. Rambo also finished the campaign with 75 points, putting him third all-time for points in a season. The Tar Heel offense came out clicking, giving UNC an early 4-0 lead. Maryland had an answer with a four-goal run of its own to knot the score. Junior attackman Dylan Maltz found himself in the right place during a North Carolina clear attempt, picking off a would-be pass from the goalie and finished the Terps’ first goal on the doorstep. Maltz would then find a cutting Henry West followed by a Rambo tally on an extra man opportunity. It was Maltz once more who beat the goalie low-to-low to tie the contest at 4-4. North Carolina scored back-to-back goals to regain a lead, but sophomore midfielder Connor Kelly got the Terps within one, 6-5, with 11 seconds reaming in the opening frame. Kelly finished the game with a team-high four goals. A Tar Heel goal opened up the scoring in the second quarter, but another Terrapin offensive run rounded out the first half. Rambo picked out West who stung a corner to kick off the three-goal run. It was the Glenside, Pa., native helping once more on the second goal of the run; this time finding Kelly, who netted his second score of the day. Then it was Rambo’s turn. He deposited a West feed on an extra-man chance for an 8-7 halftime lead. West finished with a career-high four assists on the day. A North Carolina three-goal run was sandwiched between goals from Rambo and Kelly in the third quarter. The teams entered the final quarter of play tied at 10-10. After goals were traded to start the fourth frame, junior attackman Colin Heacock finished his second of the day, followed by Kelly’s fourth and final tally to give Maryland a 13-11 lead. North Carolina would answer with a pair of goals to tie the contest at 13-13 and send the game to overtime where they eventually scored on an extra man opportunity to secure the title. Freshman faceoff specialist Austin Henningsen finished the day with an excellent mark at the X, winning 19-of-30 draws. Senior goalie Kyle Bernlohr finished with nine saves.
