NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Brendan Gleason tied a Notre Dame NCAA Championship record by scoring five goals while Brendan Collins added a career-high four more as the men's lacrosse team rolled to a 15-9 win over Marquette on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Arlotta Stadium. With the win the Irish advance to their eighth straight NCAA quarterfinal, marking the longest active streak in the country. Notre Dame will face Denver in the NCAA quarterfinals on Saturday, May 20 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and will either start at noon or 2:30 p.m. ET. How It Happened The Irish were hitting on all cylinders in the first frame, jumping out to a 3-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes. Gleason, Collins and Ryder Garnsey each scored unassisted goals in the quarter to provide the offensive firepower. The Notre Dame defense locked down Marquette, allowing just one goal and two shots on frame while pressuring the Golden Eagles into four turnovers. Notre Dame extended its lead to three goals early in the second quarter, as Collins scored his second of the half off a pass from Sergio Perkovic. The Golden Eagles' offense then came alive, as the visitors scored three unanswered goals to tie the score at 4-4 midway through the second stanza. The Irish answered with a 3-0 run of their own to take a 7-4 lead into the halftime break. Gleason put Notre Dame back on top at 5-4 before Timmy Phillips and Mikey Wynne each notched transition scores to put an exclamation mark on the end of the first half. Notre Dame's offense exploded in the third quarter, finding the back of the net five times, while the defense allowed three Marquette scores to give the Irish a 12-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Gleason was on fire in the third, scoring three goals to keep up his superb form. Wynne scored his second of the afternoon from right in front of the crease and Collins completed his hat trick with his third of the day. The Irish finished the game strong, outscoring Marquette 3-2 in the final 15 minutes to secure the 15-9 victory. Collins closed his goal account in the fourth quarter with his fourth goal of the day, setting a career-high for the junior. A pair of freshman closed out the scoring for the Irish as Bryan Costabile and Brian Willetts each found the back of the net in the last six minutes of action. Notre Dame Player Of The Game Gleason's unbelievable offensive run continued on Sunday, as the sophomore recorded a career-high six points on five goals and an assist. The five goals tie the Notre Dame record for most goals in a game during an NCAA tournament game. The attackman now has 12 goals in his last three games, which mark the first three hat tricks in his Notre Dame career. Notre Dame Stat Of The Game The Irish tied the program record for goals scored in an NCAA Championship game on Sunday with 15. The 15 goals also mark the third highest output for Notre Dame this season, just one shy of its season best mark of 16 goals which occurred against Georgetown and Michigan in the first two games of the season. Notre Dame Notes The Irish improve to 6-0 against Marquette in the all-time series and are 1-0 when facing the Golden Eagles in the NCAA Championships. Notre Dame punched its ticket to its eighth straight NCAA quarterfinal, marking the longest active streak in the country. Collins recorded his first multi-goal performance of the season and second of his career. The junior has nine goals on the season and 19 in his career. With two goals on Sunday, Wynne has a team-high 30 goals on the season and 103 in his three years with the Irish. Gleason now has a career-high 25 goals on the season and 27 in his Irish career. Garnsey became the fourth Irish player to reach the 20-goal mark on the season, as he now has 20 in the 2017 campaign. Shane Doss finished with 12 saves and has recorded 10-plus saves 10 times this season. The senior has finished with 10-plus saves in five of his last six games. Costabile scored a goal and now has 17 on the season. Willetts found the back of the net for the fourth time this year. Phillips notched his fourth goal of the 2017 campaign. Perkovic donned the No. 40 jersey on Sunday to honor the late Mike Sennett, who was a former captain at Notre Dame.
