COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 20-ranked Ohio State men’s lacrosse team moved its record to 6-0 this season, downing Bellarmine, 14-11, Sunday in Milwaukee, Wis. It is the best start for a Buckeye squad since the 1966 team went undefeated through all 14 games of its campaign. The game was Ohio State’s second in the Midwest Lacrosse Classic; the Buckeyes beat host Marquette 12-6 Friday.
The Buckeyes broke open a tie game in the second quarter, outscoring Bellarmine 8-2 in the stanza for a 10-4 halftime lead. Bellarmine outscored the Buckeyes 7-4 in the second half, but was unable to get closer than four until the final seconds. In the win 12 Buckeyes had a point, led by Eric Fannell with five points on two goals and three assists and Colin Chell with a hat trick. Tre Leclaire and Lukas Buckley both had two goals and three points. Jake Withers and Christian Feliziani combined to win 22-of-28 faceoffs and Withers picked up nine groundballs.
Ohio State returns home to host Cleveland State, which joined Division I this season, at 1 p.m. Saturday in Ohio Stadium.
In the First Quarter …
The Knights scored the game’s first two goals, with goals 44 seconds apart at 11:45 and 11:01. Lukas Buckley put the Buckeyes on the board, assisted by Tre Leclaire, at 6:27 and at 2:07 Ryan Terefenko scored in transition to tie the game at two. Shots were 9-8 in favor of the Knights in the quarter and each goalie had two saves.
In the Second Quarter …
The Buckeyes controlled the second quarter, outscoring Bellarmine 8-2 and outshooting the Knights 12-6. Ohio State scored the first three goals of the quarter, all in a 1:17 span. Colin Chell put the Buckeyes in the lead for the first time at 13:47, assisted by Eric Fannell, and off the next faceoff, Jake Withers passed to Lukas Buckley for a goal at 13:36. Eric Fannell tallied 1:06 after that, making it a 5-2 Buckeye lead.
Bellarmine notched the next goal at 9:58, but Ohio State answered with a five-goal run. Fannell set up Chell for goals at 9:12 and 6:48, surrounding a goal by Tre Leclaire at 8:23. Withers had his second assist of the quarter at 6:27 when he found Bo Lori for a score. At 5:31 Johnny Pearson set up Leclaire with the Buckeyes man-up. The final goal of the quarter was scored by Bellarmine with five seconds remaining, sending the teams into halftime with the Buckeyes ahead 10-4.
In the Third Quarter...
Bellarmine outscored the Buckeyes 4-3 in the third quarter for a 13-8 game after 45 minutes. The teams traded goals early, with a score by the Knights at 12:17, answered by Buckeye freshman Nick Musci, off an assist from Lukas Buckley, at 10:00. The Knights had the next two goals at 6:17 and 5:23 to draw within four (11-7). Ohio State scored twice in the final 3:03, with goals from Austin Shanks and Fannell, along with a BU goal at 1:15. Bellarmine had nine shots in the period, with Ohio State attempting eight.
In the Fourth Quarter …
Bellarmine scored a man-up goal at 10:21 of the fourth quarter and JT Blubaugh responded for the Buckeyes at 9:52. A goal by the Knights at 7:12 drew BU within four but they get just one goal closer, scoring with 17 seconds remaining. The Knights had the edge on shots in the quarter, 8-6. Buckeye goalie Matthew Smidt made three saves in the stanza.
