| | I agree with everyone's comments about GT being left out, especially with wins over Duke and Navy. But unfortunately, having a strong record and high ranking doesn't mean you get into the NCAA Tournament. There is criteria set forth which the Selection Committee has to abide by when choosing teams. The 3 factors are Ratings Percentage Index, Strength of Schedule, and Quality Wins (which are based on the RPI Rankings and SOS). GT ranked 18th in RPI, 27th in SOS, and 18th in QW's, for an overall ranking of 20th. Thus they were left out and Navy gets in with an overall ranking of 14, Denver is in with a ranking of 12, and Ohio State had a ranking of 8. Duke had the highest RPI and QW's, but UNC had the #1 Strength of Schedule, followed by UVA and Hopkins. UNC beat Notre Dame, which is why UNC is the #4 seed. Trust me, my heart goes out to the kids at GT and Drexel because they both had great seasons. I think having the USILA rankings are nice, but I wish we could follow the rankings of the teams that the Selection Committee will use throughout the year. If we knew GT was ranked 20th because of their poor RPI, SOS, and QW's, this would not be the surprise we see it as. |
