The Game Story:

Virginia dethroned the reigning national champions Saturday at the Carrier Dome in a close 16-15 game in front of a great crowd of 10,635. The win snaps Virginia's three game skid against the Orange in the always anticipated season opener. Midfielder A.J. Shannon led the Cavaliers in scoring with 6 points, but it was attackman Johnny Christmas who turned out to be the hero when he scored with 22 seconds left in the game to give Virginia a 16-15 edge. Syracuse won the ensuing face-off, but a Virginia defenseman intercepted a pass in front of the goal and it was all over. In a losing effort Mike Springer led the charge for the Orange with 5 goals and 2 assists including the tying 15th goal with only minutes left in the fourth quarter.

As the game got underway Syracuse seemed to control things early before getting 2 goals in the first four minutes from midfielders Sean Lindsay and Pat Hogan. Virginia quickly answered back with two of their own goals coming only a minute apart. Syracuse seemed to apply a lot of pressure this quarter yet Virginia was able to come away virtually unscathed trailing only 4-3 going into the second. By this time it was apparent that Syracuse was having a tough time winning face-offs and the trend continued all game up until later in the fourth. Going into the second period Virginia got a man-up goal from senior Chris Rotelli to tie the game which was the first of their 3 in the quarter, each of which was followed by a Syracuse goal. Then with only 1:14 left the Orange were able to get 2 in a row after Mike Powell found Brian Nee opened out top who put it home.

Syracuse went into halftime with an 8-6 lead despite losing 11 of 16 in the face-off circle. After the break Syracuse was able to capitalize on a man-up opportunity after an illegal procedure penalty called on the Cavaliers. The rest of the third quarter turned out to be all Virginia as they outscored Syracuse 7-2 sending the game into the fourth riding a 13-10 lead. Their seventh goal of that quarter was scored with :01 seconds on the clock after a Virginia defenseman heaved the ball the length of the field and incredibly found an open Joe Yevoli who was able to sneak past the collapsing Cuse defense and slip it by Pfeifer. This definitely gave them the momentum going into the fourth and it turned out to be just as crucial as it was lucky.

The final quarter was a seesaw battle the whole way much like the rest of the game, yet after a strong third period, Virginia was able to mount a 2 goal lead which was cut to nothing after goals from Syracuse’s star freshman Brian Crockett and Mike Springer. UVA ended up with the ball and took a timeout with only 1:03 remaining and the game tied at 15. Their offense worked the ball effectively and they were able to find Christmas opened out top who fired a bounce shot past Pfeifer to seal the game.

From a spectator’s standpoint, I would say that Syracuse lost this game in the face-off circle. It is definitely an area they will have to work on if they want to be able to win the big games. On the plus side, however, I would say that a lot of questions have been answered about their defense. Even though Virginia scored 16 goals, the Syracuse defense played very well considering how much they were pressured and should only improve due to the fact that there are two newcomers added to their starting close D in Dan DiPietro and Don Vidosh. On the other end of the field, Virginia’s Brett Hughes did a great job of containing Mike Powell who finished the game with only 2 assists. This definitely disrupted the Syracuse offense and if Springer hadn’t come to play this could have been a very different game. Even though Virginia came away with the win I would hardly say the result can be telling about what will happen in May. Syracuse will be a much stronger team come tournament time and they’ll definitely be out for revenge.

scared? you think i'm scared? no no...first of all, syracuse BARELY got by UVa last year, and believe me, i know that syracuse is good. i'm not saying they aren't, but i'm saying this year UVa poses too many matchup problems. there isn't a first midfield that can contend with Shannon, Rotelli and Glading. There are some good defenders out there, Sol Bliss being one of them, but he clearly cannot keep up with Christmas, and if you focus too much on John, you have Yevoli and Ward to make you pay. This game was a great example of the diversity of the UVa offense...Ward, Yevoli, Christmas and Shannon all had at least 3 goals. I know that SU-UVa will be a good game everytime, and usually it has gone Cuse's way, but this year will be UVa's year. They just have too many weapons. end of story.

considering how bad su played, uva only won by one goal, which prolly uva will get rocked in the final four if they make it, and powell is not their whole team mike springer played nasty

Uva-SU
by MCLax8 (#26024) on 3/02/03 @7:41PM
listen, UVa and Syracuse's rivalry is always tight, no matter how either team plays. neither team has ever "rocked" the other team, and trust me, everyone knows that if any team is going to make it to the finals, it's UVa. and you're right, powell is not their whole time, and springer DID play nasty. it's always a good game, and that's what i appreciate, all i'm saying is that this year it's going to go UVa's way.

UVA is loaded this year with a sick attack, some very good middies, Brett Hughes-who held Powell scoreless, and with Johnson in goal. UVA will definitly make another run to the final four if not the final.

UVa's Year
by MCLax8 (#26024) on 3/02/03 @10:54AM
This is clearly UVa's year. With an unbelievable attack of Christmas, Yevoli and newcomer Matt Ward, they clearly do not lack offensive power. Christmas and Yevoli are sure to be 1st team AA and we have yet to see how far Ward goes. A.J. Shannon is as good as it gets in the college game in terms of size, speed, power and consummate skill, look for his 1st team AA nomination as well. Tillman is arguably the best goalie in the country, Pfeifer's got nothin. Brett Hughes showed by DOMINATING Powell that there is no attackman that is a match for him in today's college world, especially if he plays well. Chris Rotelli is one of the best middies in the world right now, and Devilliers is going to have a breakout, dominant season on the draw. This year, there isn't a single team that can contend with the complete package that the Cav's are packin, so D1, move aside, and let the Wahoos streamroll their way into a 2nd National Championship. The only team that can stop them is themselves.

by jenga5 (#45447) on 3/02/03 @12:27PM
yes the orangemen did loose, and yes powell was held scoreless by hughes (hughes played very good) but it is only the second game played by most college teams. everyone knows that anything can happen in the game of lacrosse. i think that everyone is jumping the gun here. syracuse let in a couple of easy goals including a cheep from the other end of the feild that landed in a virgina players stick for an easy one. see you in the post season virginia fans.

by lmiller32837 (#44448) on 3/02/03 @3:17PM
GOOD GAME with two talented squads. What happened to all the idiotic "Lords of Lacrosse" who tried to install a shot clock - and almost succeeded? Maybe they should watch more first class lacrosse games - not just Division 1, but also some high school games - on Long Island, around Syracuse, the DC suburbs, or the Baltimore big leagues (Boys'Latin, Gilman, Loyola, etc.)
The state of the game is fine - it ain't broke, just let it play

"lords of lacrosse"?
by ngelaxer (#45485) on 3/02/03 @3:49PM
No no no. Your comment about the shot clock is completely out of place here, because what you don't realize is that the instiution of the shot clock was proposed so that MORE games would look like Virginia-Syracuse games, thereby pleasing fans like you. Fans like games that end is 16-15 results, but fans don't like games that end in 7-6 results (like many Princeton games), because there is not enough scoring. The shot clock would help speed up the play over other teams, elevating them to the level of Virginia and Syracuse. Do your homework.

leave the game alone
by bezerkeley (#22919) on 3/03/03 @12:22AM
screw the fans that want to ruin the integrity of the game and institute a shot clock. Lacrosse is not about pleasing the desires of spectators. whos to say 7-6 isnt enough scoring. if teams feel that seven goals isnt enough to win the game, they will change the way they play. just let the game take its course.

by ngelaxer (#45485) on 3/03/03 @8:14AM
if lacrosse is not about pleasing the desires of spectators, then what is it about? do you have some romantic notion of "the game" as pure and untouchable? you're so wrong if you think that teams will change the way they play, not to mention the fact that it's not "the fans" that wanted to institute a shot clock. how do you know the shot clock would have been so bad?

postseason
by MCLax8 (#26024) on 3/02/03 @7:36PM
granted, everyone knows that the season can take some twists and turns, but let's face it, syracuse, virginia and princeton are always in the final, and certainly this year syracuse and virginia will be in the finals. it's also common knowledge that su-va games are always decided by one goal and are very tight. don't worry about virginia, everyone knows it's their year...either this year or the next. but be sure of one thing, there isn't an attackman that's going to beat brett hughes and there isn't a defense that can stop the likes of Christmas, Yevoli, Ward, Shannon, and Rotelli. so, we will see you there, in the finals, only this time, UVa's going to run away with the title. Guranteed.

Stack ups
by ziptop (#45083) on 3/03/03 @12:45PM
Syracuse' weakness seems to be their middies. Can they stack up? Md' defense could hold down Va. or Cuse, they're tough and they're back. And their goalie is almost definetly better than either.
