The first half started with Notre Dame goalie junior Tara Durkin having a difficult time clearing the ball with no teammates open in the midfield. She must have had the ball for one minute. When Georgetown got the ball back they wasted almost no time with a lefty shot by senior tri-captain Kristin Baer. There was no scoring for the next twelve minutes as both teams settled into their offenses and the goalies made some nice saves. Eventually freshman Liz Ryan found senior tri-captain Jordan Keating open in front of the cage. Keating put a quick shot past Durkin to make the score 2-0. Shortly after junior all-american Sheehan Stanwick got her first of the game off a free position. Then Stanwick scored again by driving lefty across the crease and firing a hard shot. It then turned into a family affair with Sheehan's freshman sister Wick scoring on a free position to make the score 5-0. Notre Dame finally got on the board with a fast break goal near the end of the half by freshman Angela Dixon from fellow freshman Danielle Shearer. That fast break was started by the amazing take-off speed of sophomore Maureen Henwood.
The second half started off all Hoyas. The first goal was scored in highlight-film fashion by sophomore Erin Elbe. She made two nice face dodges past defenders, then dropped the ball, and in attempt to regain possession, slapped the ball upstairs and stung the top right corner. It was the treat of the afternoon. Next for the Hoyas was Baer with her second of the game. At the 24:06 mark of the second half freshman Stanwick scored on a feed from Elbe. Ten seconds later Baer got a hat trick with a beautiful cross field look from freshman Stanwick. Notre Dame went on a two goal spurt to try to bring the game within reach. Sophomore Alissa Moser scored on a feed from Dixon then Dixon scored herself. Georgetown put an end to the comeback by scoring the next five goals. Junior Sarah Oglesby made a smart play off a free position and hit an open Elbe who put it past the keeper. Junior Stanwick got the next two goals on an inside roll and free position to give her a total of four on the day. Elbe returned the favor to Ogelsby with 2:41 to play. The Hoyas final goal of the game was by sophomore Kate Ahern on a pass from junior Stanwick. Notre Dame snuck one in with 17 seconds left but for all purposes the game was over.
Game notes: This was the one and only independant match-up between these two teams. Next year they will both move to the Big East along with Boston College, UCONN, Rutgers, Virginia Tech and Syracuse. ND goalie Tara Durkin was great in between the pipes. Her saves kept this game from being a real blow-out. This is ND's only fourth year with women's lacrosse. Head coach Tracy Coyne who has been with the team all four years was recently selected to coach the Canadian national team. The Stanwick sisters were a part of eight of the team's 14 goals. The Hoyas next game will be against the Tarheels of North Carolina on Saturday. The Fighting Irish will play game two of a five game road trip at UCONN on Saturday. | | |
