Vancouver Cancels Season | Vancouver Cancels Season press release December 14, 2004(New York)--The National Lacrosse League announced that the Vancouver
Ravens have been removed from the 2005 NLL schedule due to their
inability to secure a suitable arena lease. The Ravens, who entered
the league as an expansion franchise for the 2002 season, had
played their home games at General Motors Place in Vancouver for the
past three seasons. Following the conclusion of its initial
three-year lease at General Motors Place, the club engaged in
negotiations with both General Motors Place and the Pacific Coliseum,
also in Vancouver, in an effort to secure a lease agreement for the
2005 season.
On December 6th, the NLL received written confirmation that the
Pacific Coliseum agreed to enter into an agreement to host the
Vancouver Ravens for the 2005 season. The league imposed a deadline
of today for the Ravens to secure a formal lease and meet certain
financial conditions imposed by the NLL.
The management for the Pacific Coliseum notified the club yesterday
that it was ceasing negotiations towards a formal lease agreement,
despite its written confirmation of December 6 to enter into an
agreement.
A revised 2005 schedule will be released shortly. The league will
also hold a dispersal draft of the Vancouver Ravens players tomorrow,
December 15, 2004 at 6:00 PM Eastern via teleconference call.

 | What's the Deal with the NLL? by trudie (#37283) on 12/15/04 @3:16PM | | | | A few weeks before the season starts and Ravens' plug is pulled? I don't understand the logic, I know it all has to do with having a "suitable" arena, but doesn't seem fairly late for something like this to be happening?
Who can you blame for this?
Not really the owner of the team, he had a few partners bail on him and tried his best by keeping the team afloat by selling his house.
Vancouver is a death trap for most pro franchises anyway...remember the Grizzlies? Vancouver is almost as bad as Washington DC! (Don't get me started on the Expos/Nationals!)
How about the Commish. Mr. Jennings? While he has made the league truly national, he also has lost franchises in (Long Island's) New York Saints and Baltimore's Thunder. The two places that should always have a lacrosse team regardless.
Is he being unreasonable with his "business model" and is relying on NHL to help own/manage teams the best idea when they aren't even playing right now?
I am I the only one who finds this whole ordeal very peculiar?

| | | | What? by CDNLAXER (#48381) on 12/18/04 @3:13PM | | | | If the fans dont support it, it will fail in any city. I was at the Bmore Thunder games, it was a joke, shitty arena, and nobody there, I never paid for a tix, in fact my entire college lax team went for free.
Vancouver tried to make it, and were doing okay, what are they supposed to do when the arena wont lease to them? Its the fault of the Arena management, not the Ravens front office.
I live in Toronto, and the fans support the hell out of that team, and thats why it will stay around.
As for the NHL, you cant compare the two, its apples to oranges. | | | | | Reply to this |

| | | | | Thunder games = good time by trudie (#37283) on 12/19/04 @12:17AM | | | | The NHL and NLL are a lot different, its just scary to think that the NLL looks up to the NHL while they have all these problems.
My college team went for free to a few thunder games (Ulman/Goucher connection), I always enjoyed them, it was more about the crappy arena than the product (indoor lacrosse), plus they didn't really have a chance with the NLL for very long (mostly MILL), or with the somewhat renovated arena.
Baltimore does take for granted its lax teams (Bayhawks, Thunder).
I just find it bizarre that NLL is missing from Boston, LI, and Baltimore. I understand they didn't fair well money wise, but its just one of those things that a lacrosse league should do, include the hotbeds.
I would at least like a return to the ESPN2 Saturday morning highlight show with Leif Elsmo (RIPPIN'ROPE!). | | | | | Reply to this |
