All Star Weekend

All Star Weekend
by boomerw on February 24, 2005

This weekend is a big one for lacrosse. For those of you who have been locked in a basement all winter, the National Lacrosse League (NLL) all-star game is going to be nationally televised on NBC. It doesn't matter if you have only seen field lacrosse, or box lacrosse is just not your thing. We all have to tune in, and show support to help the sport of lacrosse grow. For those of you who are not familiar with box lacrosse, Lax.com is going to give you some key players to keep your eye on.

First, without question, everyone should keep their eyes peeled for number 22 on the Western Division team. Gary Gait is making his final NLL all-star appearance. This year Gait is leading his team, the Colorado Mammoth, in points, and is considered the best player ever to pick up a stick. The Calgary Roughnecks Tracey Kulesky and Dan Dawson from Arizona Sting on the West's forward line will join Gait. Kelusky, the captain of the 2004 NLL Champions, is having another outstanding season with 40 points so far. Dan Dawson who is second in the league in points should do some damage on the East's goalie. On the defensive end for the West there is Pat Coyle from the Colorado Mammoth, and Jim Moss from San Jose. San Jose's Anthony Cosmo will be starting in goal and will back them up. This team will be coached by Chris Hall from the Calgary Roughnecks.

The Eastern team will be lead by John Grant Jr., from the Rochester Knighthawks, at the forward position. Grant is currently leading the league in over all points with 59 (30 goals 29 assists). Legendary box player John Tavares will join Grant at the forward position. Tavares will also be the alternate captain for the Eastern squad. Toronto Rock's Blaine Manning will share time with Grant and Tavares. In 2004, Manning finished 4th overall in League and first for the Rock in point standings with 90 points on 36 goals and 54 assists. The East defense will be lead by Glenn Clark from the Toronto Rock and Andrew Turner from the Rochester Knighthawks. They will have Pat O'Toole from the Knighthawks anchoring the Eastern group. O'Toole, Grant, Turner will be joined by their Knighthawk coach Paul Day. Day will have to put in a serious game plan to try and stop Gary Gait and the rest of the Western all- stars.

There are a few thing's you should expect to see from these players: Gary Gait will score a "around-the-back" few times." John Grant and Tracey Kelusky (childhood friends) doing a whatever you can do I can do better and putting on a scoring bananza. John Tavares being the silent killer and putting up some serious points. Pat O'Toole standing on his head and making some sick saves. Finally a high scoring, hard hitting, and fast paced game that will be enjoyed by all lacrosse players, fans, and new comers to the sport. So, on Saturday February 26 at 2:00pm ET. Turn on your TV's to Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary and watch NBC's broadcast of professional lacrosse.

What a week for UVM. First the bball team is on espn the season and now tommy hajek is in the nll all star game. I know tom won't make the catamounts look as goofy as the bball team did.

If anyone else agrees the NLL is kind of a joke. I mean its lax and thats good but why does no one care about it,personally lax is ment to played in the open field. It's not called "The fastest game on 2 feet for nothing. I just don't find it that interesting. The MLL entertains people i guess but i just dont like box lax that much.

whatever floats your boat
by (#37283) on 2/25/05 @12:44AM
it all depends on who you are...

Some (Americans) people are fanatics about the NLL and Box lax. Canadians of course are automatically boxla fanatics. (I would move to Canada to get one of those license plates with the beaver holding a lacrosse stick).

Some people just watch it because there isn't much quality lax in their area (like me in AZ, or in San Jose, Minnesota, or Anaheim)

Some people (prideman#1) think box lacrosse is a bastadization of the game.

I think your entitled to your opinion (but think encourage people to watch the all-star game)

Box lacrosse is actually a "legitimate" sport, just as "field lacrosse" was an early (if not the first) professional sport in North America. Lacrosse players had similar labor disputes like today's pro sports and had lax knocked down several pegs to almost nothing as a result. Canadians fused lax with hockey in the early 1900s because they could relate to it better and because of the lack of popularity the game was getting at the time.

I am paraphrasing of course, check out the book by Donald Fisher, "Lacrosse" there is a whole chapter about it. Certainly a great read if your on lax.com!

(apologies for the length and bad spelling)

this yankee loves the nll, been this way since i saw the old wings back in the '70's. field is great but box at this level is w/out peer. i'm hoping that some of the field purists gave the nll its fair shake today and came away w/ a better appreciation.

who needs the nhl when us boxla fans have the nll - its 90% cheaper and 90% more the fun.

dallas eliuk - deserved mvp, the man is a legend here in philly.

MLL
by (#55043) on 2/26/05 @7:54PM
The MLL needs to do all it can to try and get JGJ(John Grant Jr. If anyone remebers in 2000 when he played the 1st MLL season with the Americans.vs.The Nationals he was insane. He's such a good player and he can be a big boost for the MLL's woes.

i thought you said no one cares about the nll
by (#5616) on 2/26/05 @9:20PM
grant was the college player despite playing @ undermanned delaware and w/ little top flight field experience. grant was the best player in the mll despite not playing competitive field for like 3-seasons. as good as grant's dad was, junior is even better. but why would you think getting a player from a league that no one cares about be a boost for mll woes?

today's game was about the best all-star game i have ever seen in any sport. to think that the goalies only gave up 5-goals a piece against that array of shooting talent says quite alot about them and their defenders in front of them.

I never said a word about the NLL in my last post you ass. Second of all i mentioned Grant and mentioned how great of a player he is so don't think your smart because you listed all these facts about him. And he was in the MLL and they did well when he played there so read b4 you start runnin your mouth bud.

mll allstar game
by (#991) on 3/03/05 @8:14PM
I watched the game...two things...first you can't have the arena announcer acting like a cheerleader.."OK folks Let's Go west. Let's go West"..first nobody cares in an all star game...second it reeks of roller deby...next when you have goalies wearing pads that cover the entire goal why move to block the shot...just stand there...they looked like the dolls you try to knock down at the carnival...all fluff and no doll..hit the fluff and the doll doesn't go down...let the shooters have at least some of the goal to shoot at...the announcers don't have to create the excitement during play...let the play create the excitement

apparently you've never tried to play box lacrosse. you think that the goalie takes up the whole net without having to move then u must not have even watched the nll allstar game. shooters grow up having that little amount of net to shoot at and it shows in players like grant, gait and all the other top players in the league. their shots are so accurate that if the goalies didnt move they may as well be shooting at an wide open net. you have more scoring in the nll than the mll and the nets are smaller and the goalies take up more room so its obvious that there is more shooting skilled involved in box lacrosse

this is why box is better than field!
by (#5616) on 3/04/05 @10:09AM
field its about power - launch a 90 laser at some poor kid trying to protect a goal nearly 1/3 bigger in area. box kids rely more on accuracy than power as they have less to shoot at despite getting hammered.

i don't think josh sanderson could get a shot off over 80mph but he paints the corners like a davinci.

different strokes and different nets
by (#104699) on 5/22/05 @9:11AM
Scanning some early 90's videos from the Ontario lacrosse association looking for some drills to use in practice, earlier today; not sure who wrote the text but the narrator was Ron MacLean of Hockey Night in Canada: at one point he noted that basketball, with tiny nets, routinely sees teams score 50 times per game, while soccer, with those huge nets, routinely sees 'nil-nil' ties; hockey and both variants of lax are in the middle.
Probably accurate to say that field (I can literally hop over my back fence and be on a field/soccer pitch) is a more territorial game of strategy and getting in position to shoot a high percentage shot, while box is about possession and getting into position to shoot a more difficult shot. Comparisons between box and basketball, in terms of transition games and trying to get a one on one matchup which allows an offensive player to drive to the net, are also a propos. Just due to the player movement restrictions in field, attackmen don't get a lot of uncontested space; it's a different process to score in field, even if the technique is the same.
Most of the box purists also feel that the NLL is a bastardized game. Best place to really see box is in the Canadian Major Series, played in little regional arenas on concrete floors with most of the same NLL players. The Junior A series is very similar, and played mostly in the same arenas, but the difference is the precision of the passing in the Major series. In context of the compressed size of the playing field, and the checking involved, box is a lot like the proverbial 'knife fight in a phone booth' which has no winners, only survivors.
