The Game Story:

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Junior midfielder Joe Boulukos scored a career-high seven goals and finished with a personal-best eight points as No. 8-ranked Cornell won a 16-14 decision against No. 6 Syracuse. It was the first win for the Big Red at the Carrier Dome since April 11, 1987.

The Orange led 4-1 in the first quarter. Senior midfielder Jarett Park (Otisco, N.Y.) had a hand in SU's first three goals with a goal and two assists. Sophomore middie Steven Brooks (Libertyville, Ill.) was hot early on, too, with three goals in the game's first 16 minutes. He achieved his second hat trick of the season just 35 seconds into the second quarter and the goal gave SU a 5-2 advantage. From that point on, every time the Big Red scored, Syracuse answered. Boulukos got his hands free for a 12-yard shot to make it 5-3 at 12:12 of the second period, but junior attackman Brett Bucktooth (Onondaga Nation, N.Y.) fired a rocket off a pass from Park just seven seconds later to restore SU's three-goal lead. John Glynn picked up a groundball off the back of the Syracuse net and curled around the cage for Cornell's fourth goal at the 9:38 mark, but the Orange quickly bumped it back up to a three-goal margin (7-4) with 9:17 remaining in the period after freshman attackman Mike Leveille (Delmar, N.Y.) deposited the first of his team-high four goals into the back of the Cornell net.

The Big Red called a timeout at the 8:31 mark and when possession was handed back over to Syracuse, Orange head coach John Desko asked for a timeout with 8:17 remaining. From there, SU slowly started losing its momentum. Boulukos beat SU defenseman Scott Ditzell (Geneva, N.Y.) to the cage to cut the score to 7-5 at the seven-minute mark. He then set up Sean Greenhalgh to pull his team to within one (7-6) with 5:27 left in the pivotal second period.

Junior midfielder Greg Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y.) tallied his first goal of the night off a roll dodge with 1:34 remaining. That goal gave the Orange an 8-6 advantage, but Cornell rattled off two goals in the quarter's final 11 seconds, one by Boulukos (his fourth) and a last-second heave by Mike Pisco to Kevin Nee which tied the game at 8-8. The Big Red went into the lockerroom at halftime with momentum and a new-found confidence.

Derek Haswell gave Cornell its first lead of the game (9-8) just 1:10 into the third quarter. It was his second of four goals for the night. Boulukos netted his fifth goal with a hard shot to the bottom, right corner of the net at the 13:09 mark to give the Big Red a 10-8 lead. Bucktooth found junior attackman Brian Crockett (Yorktown, N.Y.) for SU's ninth goal with 11:48 remaining in the period. Haswell and Greenhalgh tallied again for Cornell. Greenhalgh's second score was off a rebound and it gave the Big Red its largest lead of the night (three goals, 12-9) with 8:08 left in the third.

Crockett answered by driving, rolling right and then finishing with a high shot that pulled the Orange back to within two (12-10) with 5:53 remaining. Leveille operated on the right side and came away with a goal at the 3:39 mark to pull the home team to within a goal (12-11) heading into the fourth quarter.

Leveille tied the game with his third goal just 44 seconds into the final period. Cornell took the first lead (13-12) after Greenhalgh connected with Haswell and from there, Syracuse was playing catch-up.

Rommel tied it up at 13-13 when he switched hands, left to right, on a drive to the cage with 8:18 remaining. Boulukos used a shot on the run to record goal No. 6 with 6:26 left. That gave Cornell a 14-13 lead. Bucktooth found Leveille for SU's last goal of the night with 4:10 left. That goal knotted the contest at 14-14.

The go-ahead goal was recorded by Nee with 2:30 remaining. It came off a feed from Justin Redd. Boulukos added an insurance goal, his seventh of the night, with 1:27 remaining.

Syracuse is 5-4 and will remain at home to play Rutgers on Saturday, April 16, at 4 p.m.

Cornell improved its record to 6-2 on the season.
