GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and
Jon Sowanick (Bethesda, MD/Bullis) each scored three goals to lead No. 4
Gettysburg to a 16-9 victory over 11th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan in the
second round of the 2005 NCAA Division III men's lacrosse championships
on Saturday.
Gallant, Sowanick, Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark's) and
T.J. Liberto (Arnold, MD/St. Mary's) combined to net eight goals in the
first two periods, staking the Bullets (15-3) to a 13-6 halftime
advantage.
Pryor added two assists to help Gettysburg win its 10th
straight contest and advance to face top-ranked Salisbury in the
national quarterfinals on Wednesday. The two-time defending champion Sea
Gulls moved on with a 13-9 win over Cabrini.
John Schlegel scored five goals for the Battling Bishops
(10-4), who were meeting the Bullets for the second time in the NCAA
playoffs - a 12-5 Ohio Wesleyan victory in 1989.
Sowanick and Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown)
each finished solo runs in the game's first 3 minutes, 7 seconds to
stake Gettysburg to a 2-0 lead, and the hosts never looked back.
Sowanick got things going off a Battling Bishop turnover,
scoring unassisted at the 13:11 mark.
Stewart tallied his lone marker 1 minute, 18 seconds later
to force an OWU timeout.
Chris Renzi (Fairport, NY/Fairport) won the fourth of 11
straight face-offs to start the game for the Bullets, and Pryor tallied
unassisted 22 seconds after Harrison Iuliano cut the Battling Bishop
deficit in half at 9:31.
Gallant scored off a Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin)
assist with 7:53 to play in the first quarter to stretch the Bullet
advantage to 4-1.
Schlegel took advantage of a man-up opportunity to cut the
deficit to 4-2 at 6:20, but a minute later Liberto re-established the
three-goal advantage.
Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) finished a
back-and-forth end to first quarter with a solo marker with 49 seconds
remaining in the period to give the Bullets a 7-4 lead.
Within the first two minutes of the second quarter, Jim Culp
(Swarthmore, PA/Ridley) and Brian Ford (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) pushed
the lead to 9-4 with unassisted goals.
After Schlegel make it 9-5 with 11:39 to play until
halftime, Liberto, Freehill and Sowanick all scored unassisted to make
it a 12-5 game at the 4:37 mark.
After Schlegal broke through unassisted 3 minutes, 17
seconds into the third quarter, the defenses took over.
Harriman was the only Bullet who found the back of the net
in a six-save period by Battling Bishop goalkeeper Paul McCommons, who
finished the day with 12 stops.
The only other dent on Gettysburg keeper Pat Vaughan in a
nine-shot quarter for Ohio Wesleyan was an unassisted tally by Jarred
Law with 47 seconds remaining in the period.
Schlegel put the exclamation point on his five-goal day,
finishing a Tyler Treece pass 21 seconds into the final quarter, pulling
the Battling Bishops within 14-9.
Gallant and Sowanick capped their hat tricks with goals at
the 14:24 and 7:35 marks, respectively.
Gallant scored off a Pryor assist while Sowanick drilled
home a Gallant feed.
Vaughan finished the day with 10 saves.
The Bullets ended the contest holding a 17-10 advantage in
face-offs, including 13 wins by Renzi - one off his season high (14
against Messiah on Apr. 13).
In the earlier meeting this season, Salisbury defeated Gettysburg 13-7.
Wednesday's game time will be announced on Monday.
